Hi,

I think we should name and shame some of the dodgy dealers with poor customer service...............

I have a problem with my starview 4 usb box error 8882 and from reading through some of the threads some suppliers will exchange or fix the for you. Just so you know............

mycablebox.co.uk is not one of them.

Lets get a list going here!

Let me guess... they told you to come here for support ??

Whatever you say, say nothing when you talk about you know what for if you know who might hear you, you know what youll get. Youll be sent off to you know where for you would not know how long. Maybe I could search through the threads so you dont have to ??

I'd be pleasantly surprised if any suppliers are still exchanging boxes.

To be fair to mycablebox, they did exchange my 8882'd box last year.

I think since then it's become clear that this fault is so common that it would be unprofitable for starview and their sellers to continue to exchange/fix.

This box has a serious design fault and what starview should do is ship them with the max232 fix included, because sooner or later, if you flash them often enough, they're all going to brick in my opinion.

to be honest, I dont really agree with a name and shame list, case being as none of us know if the other person has an agenda against a seller or site, same can be said for a thread that recommends a site or seller, but you will see more people recommend someone and you will see the same suppliers name crop up time and time again which is a good indication,

my tuppence worth anyways

I think it's very useful at times but you're right - it is very problematic.

I've often got the feeling as well that certain manufacturers have their representatives as mods on certain sites and that criticism is often stifled at times.

In a way I suppose it's a big-money business and these things can be expected. Put it this way, I'll bet that a lot of the manufacturers (and sellers) have a better profit margin than VM.

I dont doubt it for a minute,

I found in the past, a name and shame post can cause hassles, at the end of the day, its the net afterall,do we really know each other to take advise when it comes to parting with cash....

by all means I think to point some one in the right direction with good advise is the way to go and from general reading of posts, you can gleam who not to buy from by other members,

I could have a grudge or a personal dislike against someone or some supplier and can vent it to cause harm, its a hard one to call, but i think letting people read existing posts (god forbid)and look about and people will get a better flavour.

The only reason a person gets the 8882 problem, is because they do not follow the instructions, they get the firmware stick it on the dongle, and don't bother reading, if you start the process of updating the firmware, the box (MUST) be switched off at the back before putting the dongle into it, then when you start it do not touch anything after it starts to download, like pressing the remote before the box has rebooted, and taken the dongle out of it before its finished, and not switching the box off at the back before removing, that is the main cause of the 8882 problem.

This is incorrect. Have you actually done this yourself, or seen it done? I know it's incorrect because I've had an 8882 brick myself. It's a bad flash.

In my opinion the USB story has been made up by people with an interest in trying to persuade customers it's their own fault that the SV4 has a design flaw.

Exactly. Three boxes all loaded the same way. Two okay, one bricked. Nothing to do with taking the USB out.

basically yeah, but if you get 2 months out of it the box would have paid for itself, if you were to add up all the premuim channell and extra add on prices.

I have flash lots of SV4 USB and not ever a prob, people fiddle with the remote etc thinking it will make it go faster, when the flash is been done, or they dont give the box enough time to reboot. As i say i have done lots of them and not even 1 8882 prob did i get.

Do you have any evidence to back up your view?

I reckon you've been very lucky, because I've had a bad flash and I wasn't doing anything.

Tony all i can say is ive done it, how do you prove something like that, if someone tells you they got a 8882 error, they are not going to say well, i was fiddling with the remote, or took out the dongle while the box was flashing because it was stuck on 0%, are they.?

First thing you must have is a clean usb dongle,
no other files on it then make sure you get the file from a proper site
Dongle must be inserted with box switched of at the switch at the back
after you start the download put the remote out of your hand so not to fiddle with it as people tend to do
after the box has rebooted wait 20 seconds before doing anything
then do your scan etc
then turn box off at front then the back switch then remove dongle
you wont have a problem after that.

All I'm asking is what makes you think that taking the usb out has anything to do with the 8882? Where did the idea come from? Who told you this? Starview?

Try it and see what happens, you might get lucky first few times, i have had people needing jtags on their boxes because of doing it, and also fiddling with there remotes.
