ok, i could post this under the Other PC Hardware section of the forum. but know that alot of people who own a ps3, have external hard drives and use them for video playback as i do.

i have a western digital 1TB external hard drive that i bought about 6 months ago. ive put roughly 920GB's of files onto this drive but that should defenetly leave me some space (about 104GB by my calculations) so this morning i went to copy some movies over from my computer and got an error report saying "cannot copy file or folder there is not enough disk space"

i ran through disk cleanup and know that i dont have any other files that could be taking up this space.

to add to the confusion, i went on my ps3, hit triangle>information and when i have all files loaded it says i have 760GB's of free space

anyone have any ideas why this is happening? or does the ps3 not account disk space correctly? any info would be appreciated

Well a 1tb HDD doesn't have a capacity of 1000gb's for one thing. This is due to the way computers count the space the same way the computer does, they count it as 1000mb's is equal to 1gb but in reality to the computer 1024mb is 1gb. Some other things with formatting and whatnot take up space as well. You should have around 930-950gb's total, I'm not sure what the exact math for determining it is.

As for the ps3 saying there is 760gb's of free space I'm not sure of.

i know. because 1GB has 1024MB and 1TB should have 1024GB. if my ps3 can only see it as 1000MB a GB then why is my computer doing the same thing?

here i thought newegg sent me a 1.5TB on accident lol

guess the ps3 just dosent know how to calculate space.

Actually, the problem lies in the way that you are miscalculating the space. At 920 GB, a 1 TB drive is close to it's full capacity of approximately 931 GB.

Hard drive manufacturers state capacity as 1000 GB = 1 TB. Windows, and most other software, use Base 2 calculation, where 1024 GB = 1 TB. This means that your reported capacity is going to be less than what the manufacturer claims. To determine the usable capacity of an unformated drive, you need to multiply the reported capacity by 0.9313125.

Sorry to go off-topic here, but to the OP - how do you get a 1TB drive to recognize on the Ps3? I have several of them but Ps3 requires FAT32 formatting, which limits partition size. What am I missing here?

Windows is the problem with its limitations on fat32 formatting. Another free way to format a large drive to fat32 is to use fat32format.exe (just google it) This program will format any drive to fat32 and it is real fast. (I partitioned a 60 GB portion of my 500GB external drive for the PS3 and fat32format formatted the 60 GB partition in about 4 seconds.)

You will have to partition the drive if you don't want the whole thing fat32 (using windows vista or some other partition program first). And remember to ensure you know the right drive letter so you don't accidentally format the wrong drive and erase valuable date when you use this program from the command prompt.

so say you took a Hard Drive that was already FAT32 and formated to NTFS, can this program reformat it to FAT32. cause i was under the impression that was impossible.

Actually, I initially formatted the whole hard drive to NTFS to use with my vista pc. I then used vista to partition the drive into a 440GB main partition and a 60GB partition that I could use for the PS3 backup. This was all NTFS at the time. I then used fat32format.exe to format the 60GB partition from NTFS to Fat32. It did the whole 60GB and did it fast. (Note that I attached the hard drive to a laptop running XP, but I think fat32format will work with vista also as it is run from the command prompt/DOS)

After this, the PS3 would recognize the 60GB FAT32 external hard drive (it did not see the NTFS partition.

I am going to do the same thing (partition and reformat) my external so I can use it with PS3.

Have any of you converted .mkv to .vob(FAT32 size, <4gb) and played them on the PS3?

Just thinking about what would be the best route to rip/play my bluray files on the ps3.

they used to be a whole lot better. they have lost all ps3 compatibility but still a way around it.

just run through mkvmerge then through mkv2vob and you got yourself a compatible movie.
