I found a thrown out PS3 yesterday, it was lying on top of a pc on my road. I took it home and cleaned it all out, seems as if someone had spilt something in to it. It wasn't fully dismantled so it looked as if the person hadn't tried to clean it at all, only the Blu-Ray drive and the power/eject sensor board had been taken.
power/eject board costs a few pounds to replace, the problem is the blu ray drive, seeing as I don't have the control board for the drive that was originally in the console, is there any way I can fit a new drive without it. I'm guessing its similar to the way the original xbox locks the HD to the EEPROM of the motherboard, is there any way to bypass this?
The PS3 had a 40GB HD in it if that helps.
Whats the status with PS3 Chips/softmods?
thanks

I think it would cheaper to buy a new one(or even find one for sale for that matter.), rather than replace the drive, or you could try your luck and send it back to sony. Maybe they wont open it up and look at it, Or maybe they'll try to sell you a refurb for $150.

Lol I dont even have the screws to secure the shell back in place. Is there any way sony would offer me a refurb even if they know my warranty is broken?
can the PS3 be used without the blu-ray drive e.g. as a HTPC to store music etc?
thanks

Hi!
You can buy controller board for your Blue ray drive, it cost about 35 pounds or about 50 dollars. It wont play demos if the blue ray is not connected to your machine,it means that u need board for BD and connect it to your ps3. Did u ever have it alive anyway???

Then the pirate selling games relabeled Assassins Creed 1 and called it Assassins Creed 2. This is called marketing.
Your friend is honest and thinks she plays AC2 on a PS3. In reality she is playing AC1 on a PS2.

I seem to remember seeing a warranty sticker on the side of the PS$, it seemed intact, is this the only one I have to worry about? where is the serial number located.
Sureley if I send it back theyre going to realise its missing the BD.
Can the PS$ boot up and function without the BD? I dont realy care about playing PS$ games I just wanna get it working
thanks

It does not matter if warranty sticker is missing. When I called them up I even told them that I opened it to clean it out. They still offered me to send it back to SONY and I will recieve another refurbished for 150 pounds (in US about 15o dollars). But there I am not sure if they will take it without BD.
But you can boot it up without BD, it is only that DEMOS wont work if BD is not connected to PS.
Serial number is behind where all the ports are, It is white thin label.
Just get computer or monitor lead, HDMI cable and try to boot it up.

yeah my friend has a PS3 so im gonna try to borrow his AV cable and see if it works, only problem is the PS3 I have is also missing the power/eject buttons, anyone know how else I can switch on the PS3 there must be a pinout of the P/E connector. Im guessing I could short a few connections with a screwdriver and get it switched on.
What do you mean demos wont work without the BD, sureley you mean demos and games. Is there no way of transferring a PS3 game via LAN from a PC to the PS3 HD and playing it that way?
I was looking at the infectus chip, what extra functionality does this chip allow the PS3 to have?

If you disconnect BD from your system, the demo games will not start, it is because motherboard must be connected with the controller board on your BD.
System you can start withour buttons, just take the top cover off, then you will se 2 pins coming out of mother just where your buttons must be. Touch the first pin on your right and it will turn on! Left pin is for ejecting disks.
What was that chip thingy you were talking about?

you can download demos from internet using ps3 and playstation store website. You can than install game and start it, but if you BD is dosconnected game will freeze and you will need to restart you system. You can not download ps3 games on PC, only through PS3 system.

ok thats cleared things up for me now, Im gonna try booting it up asap, also am I correct in saying I can play PS2 games without the BD, by using the PS3 USBLD Im aware that certain versions of PS3 cant play PS2 games, is that just when your playing using PS2 Game Discs or even if your using a usb drive?
after spending all this time finding out about the PS3 im starting to worry that theres going to be another problem with the one I found, I heard of the YLoD are there any other major problems with the PS3 like the 360 RROD that can render the console unfixable? When I dismantled the PS3 after finding it I cleaned the motherboard and wifi/bluetooth board looked like someone had spilt some juice on the console and it had gotten inside. Also the fan at the back seemed to be bent slightly so that when it spun it would scrape the metal, I repaired it ok.
thanks
btw ive been getting loads of great information from the forums over at PS3 News, you should check it out if you havn't already

Let know if it starts, I am curious!

Hey,
It would definitely be cheaper to buy a new one. A blu-ray drive is going to cost you at the very least $100 dollars. I would just use it for part if you can or sell the parts as replacement items. I'm sorry it didn't work first clean out :-(
Aloha,
Tara

havn't tried booting it up yet, so fingers crossed it will work.
If I buy another PS3 BD will it work at all with my PS3, I know the BD is linked to the motherboard but doesn't that only prevent you playing PS3 games, wouldnt I still be able to read data DVD's and Blu-Ray Discs

no, you wont be able to play any kind of CD's if the controller board and motherboard are not friends :)
If you have controller board left on your motherboard, than you will need to get BD without controller board and connect it, than it might read disks.
