Hi all.

I've softmodded my Wii (4.0E) following Larry's guide here. It's a great guide and everything worked fine.

I'm just curious about a few things.

1) The guide says:

Quote:
This section will downgrade and patch IOS35 so we can install a cIOS.
...

Go up and select "Downgrade IOS35" (skip patchmii and dvdx).

After it downgrades IOS35 go down to "EXIT" and it should exit to the Homebrew Channel.

Run WAD Manager.
...
Go to IOS35.WAD in the list and press A.
Select action: <install wad> press A.
So first IOS35 is downgraded and then it is installed again exactly afterwards. Could anyone please explain what exactly is the difference between the IOS35 which was downgraded and the IOS35.wad which is installed right after the downgrade?

2) I installed cIOS38_rev13a as per the instructions in the guide. It says:

Quote:
Select IOS35 for the IOS to use for Instillation.

Now, if I want to install cIOS38_rev13b or a newer version in the future, which IOS should I select for the installation: IOS35 or IOS249?

3) Regarding the WAD Installation option for installing a cIOS38_rev13a, the guide says:

Quote:
WAD Installation: You will need to Google IOS38-64-v3610.wad and download it. Then place it in the root of the SD Card. Then chose WAD Installation option.
I've seen different names in other guides for the wad file which must be downloaded to install the CIOS. This obviously depends on which cios revision one needs to install.
My question however is: How do I know the file name of a WAD for a new CIOS which I want to install (for example cIOS38_rev13b)?

4) Continuing on my previous question, does the WAD file for the CIOS go into the SD card's root or into the wad folder? The guide says the root folder but I thought all WAD files go into the wad folder. (I'm not sure about this since I used the network installation option when I installed cios38_rev13a.)

Thank you all for your help.

Hi all.

Hi

I've softmodded my Wii (4.0E) following Larry's guide here. It's a great guide and everything worked fine.

I know it's a great feeling when you see everything working :)

I'm just curious about a few things.

Ok, I know that I like to know what's going on behind the scenes instead of just doing this and doing that and then suddenly everything works.

So first IOS35 is downgraded and then it is installed again exactly afterwards. Could anyone please explain what exactly is the difference between the IOS35 which was downgraded and the IOS35.wad which is installed right after the downgrade?

My understanding is that you don't actually downgrade IOS35 in the downgrade step. You just change its version to a lower one so that you can install your own IOS35 over it. Supposedly Nintendo made it so that you can't install a older version of an IOS over a newer one. You can check what I mean when I say version of an IOS here: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS_History
Notice how IOS35 has 3 versions and 3 mirrors?
The IOS35 that you install is bugged so that you can use it to install cIOS.

Now, if I want to install cIOS38_rev13b or a newer version in the future, which IOS should I select for the installation: IOS35 or IOS249?

You should use 249. 249 is what people usually use although 35 should work too. You first used 35 because you didn't have 249. 249 is actually just a modified 37, 36, or 38. In your case with cIOS38Rev13, the 38 means that it's a custom IOS 38. It just installs to the IOS249 slot.

I've seen different names in other guides for the wad file which must be downloaded to install the CIOS. This obviously depends on which cios revision one needs to install.
My question however is: How do I know the file name of a WAD for a new CIOS which I want to install (for example cIOS38_rev13b)?

First I want to say that it's easier to network install. I know that not everyone can do this though.
The Readme that comes with a cIOS says the name of the wad file that needs to be present. For example the Readme that comes with 13 under REQUISITES says - "IOS38-64-v3610.wad" original WAD file (for WAD installation).
- Network connection (for Network installation).

Also I believe if you try to install without the wad in the correct place it will say such and such wad not found or something like that.

Continuing on my previous question, does the WAD file for the CIOS go into the SD card's root or into the wad folder? The guide says the root folder but I thought all WAD files go into the wad folder. (I'm not sure about this since I used the network installation option when I installed cios38_rev13a.)

It should go in the root (this is also in the readme). But yeah all the other wads should go in the wad folder.

Thank you all for your help.

I hope that everything is going smoothly.

I was wondering again...

* From the above, I understood why IOS35.wad is installed.
* IOS36.wad is the installation of cIOS36_rev10.
* I also gather that WG3g002fix.wad installs WiiGator's Backup Launcher 0.3 Gamma channel with the 002 error fix.

But I'm not sure about IOS60patched.wad. According to http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS_History IOS60 is "Used by System Menu 4.0".
So what does this WAD do? From the name I assume it overwrites IOS60 with a patched version of the same IOS. If so, what is the patch for?

Also, does it make a difference if I install a cIOS using the installer app through HBC or if I install the WAD through WAD Manager 1.4?

Thanks

IOS60 patched allows you to play bootleg VC and Wiiware games from the SD menu. It does install over the original IOS60. And as the site says it is used by the System Menu making it very dangerous if you uninstall it. You should actually just remove the wad from your SD card so no "accidents" happen because if you do uninstall it, it's pretty much death for your Wii.

It doesn't make a different how you install cIOS.

Thanks for the info AMatthews.

I've only been modding for a week and a half or so but I'm getting used to how this whole thing works with the help of Larry's guide, you and others :) It's good to know what's going on underneath cos it makes things clear. It's easier to brick a Wii if you don't know what's going on.

Cheers

I was thinking about what you said about deleting IOS60 patched. Let's say I do something stupid and delete it. If I have preloader installed I can boot into HBC, load Wad Manager, install the wad again and save the Wii. Am I right?

:) You scared me for a second there. At first glance I thought you said I was thinking about deleting IOS60.

Not quite. Preloader patches your IOS60. Uninstalling a wad of IOS60 will still take out your System Menu and Preloader along with it.

It's among the worst bricks that you can have.

Either you have to have Bootmii installed as Boot2 and a backup of your nand or you have to send it to Nintendo.
Or also if you have a backup and you got your keys with Xyzzy then you need a infectus modchip to flash your backed up nand back to your Wii.
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Xyzzy
http://www.infectus.biz/

Don't do it, I can't think of any reason to uninstall IOS60 patched.

Edit: Actually I just thought of one. If you want to demonstrate how uninstalling it can brick your Wii or if you want to demonstrate how Bootmii can restore it after it has been bricked.

Youtube has videos of people bricking their Wii

Ooops sorry about that.... No I'm not thinking about deleting IOS60 or demonstrating anything with my Wii (actually it's my girlfriend's!) :) In fact I removed the WAD from the SD card.

Pity about preloader. I can't install BootMii as Boot2. I could install it as an IOS but its useless to me at the moment since I don't have a GameCube controller and the Power button doesn't cycle options in BootMii as IOS (or so I read on Bootmii.org). So at the moment I don't even have a NAND backup. Perhaps the next version of BootMii will fix the Power button issue.

Anyway, thanks for your help and the useful info :)

Yeah, I can imagine that being a terrible feeling if you had to say that it was bricked. There really seems to be a lot of women with Wiis these days.

And yeah there's other stuff that Preloader can handle, this just isn't one of them.

And I agree with what you said about bootmii.

Anyway you're welcome

Hi AMatthews, I just thought about a couple of things. I wonder if you could answer them please.

1) I read that I could technically install BootMii as both boot2 and IOS on the same Wii (if I have an older Wii). Can I then also install preloader and have both applications working well together (irrespective of whether BootMii was installed using one or both methods)?

2) A softmodded Wii should not be updated through the Nintendo servers. However, is it safe to play with other players over the internet?

Thanks

You can install both Bootmii and Preloader together using either method. Preloader patches IOS60 and is separate from Preloader either way. Bootmii as Boot2 becomes your Boot2 which is before IOS60 in the booting process.

Take a look at http://hackmii.com/2008/10/bootmii-the-beginning/ if you have the time.

And actually you can update a softmodded Wii with Nintendo's servers. You will just have to use IOS Downgrader afterward.
And you're fine playing with others online.

Just finished reading this. A very interesting read, giving an overview of the internals of BootMii. Thanks a lot.

BTW, when you said
Quote:

I suppose you meant

Preloader patches IOS60 and is separate from **_BootMii as IOS_** either way.

right?

Hmm, my guess would have been that if I did this, I'd just have to patch IOS60 again cos this would have been overwritten by the update! And also re-install preloader since this uses IOS60!! Seems like I'm still missing something here...

What exactly does IOS Downgrader do? It's in the extra steps of Larry's guide but since it's optional, I skipped it.

Thanks again
