This thread for is for all the commonly asked questions, that are usually asked about everyday. Yes, AfterDawn does a search button, but I feel that some people are to lazy to use it... So here is a thread to save all the Newbies the terrible task of using the search button, or starting a new thread.

Want your questions answered now? Check out the new AfterDawn360 IRC Channel!
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/807184/4879304

1. Do I have to mod my 360 to be able to play backup games?

- Yes, you must flash your 360 DVD Drive with iXtreme firmware to allow backup games to be played. This does require you to take apart the 360. There are many tutorials on AfterDawn that will explain in full detail how to flash your 360.

2a. Can/Will I get banned for playing backup games online?

- Yes, you can get banned for playing backup games online or even offline. WILL you get banned, that depends... Some people are very lucky and have played backups since day one and have not been caught, but others have played for a matter of months and end up banned. We don't know how Microsoft checks for backups, so even if they are stealthed patch you are still taking a risk.

2b. How can I lower the risk?

- You can lower the risk by making the backup games yourself, or if you download your games, make sure to run them through ABGX360 with AutoFix Level 3. You can get ABGX360 here...
http://abgx360.net/download.html

2c. I think I am banned... How do I know?

- After doing a XBOX Live test and it fails, view the "Error Status Report". If the "Z" code reads, 8015 - 190D, then you are banned. For more information about backup games and getting banned, visit this thread.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/647406

2d. If I get banned, can I still use my console?

- Yes, if you get banned, you will still be able to play games, earn achievements, and sign on to your GamerTag. But, your console will not be able to connect to XBL... If you buy a new console, use a friends console, ect. You can still sign onto XBL with your GamerTag.

2e. I play all my backup games offline. So I am safe... Right?

- As far as the modding community knows, no you will not be safe. Even when you play a game offline, as soon as you log back onto XBL your game information is sent to Microsoft. As I have stated before, we don't 100% know how Microsoft detects modded consoles/backup games. The moment you flash you flash your Firmware, you have taken the risk.

3. I got banned! All my backups are stealth patched! What did I do wrong?

- What you did wrong was you played a backup game. There is nothing wrong with playing backup games, but as soon as you flash the firmware and insert that first backup, you have taken the risk.

4a. What is the best Media to use?

- Verbatim DVD+R DL

4b. Verbatim is so expensive though, I don't have the money for it.

- You are basically paying $1.50 or less per game, last time I checked that is cheap enough. For the ones who still disagree...

Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4X 20 Pack - $23.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817130008

5. How do I flash my 360? How do I make backup games? How do I burn games? What supplies do I need? How can I fix RROD?

It's all in the sticky at the top of this forum.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/662917

6. My backups won't load/are taking a long time to load/show up as DVD.

- Most of this problem is just poor media. See in question 4a and 4b it states Verbatim is the best media to use, it is better quality and puts less stress on the laser.
- A second maybe be that you are trying to play a 3rd Wave game with iXtreme Firmware under 1.51. You must update your Firmware to at least 1.51 (1.6 is recommended). Here is a list of 3rd Wave games so far, although every game after March 2009 will be 3rd Wave.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/759562
- A third reason could be you have burned your game with a bad LayerBreak or you are missing key security files on your .ISO such as the SS or DMI. Make sure you have "Create A .DVD File" check in ABGX360 and if your Stealth is failing, making sure to set the Autofix to Level 1. ALWAYS run your .ISO through ABGX360 (1.0.1 being the newest version) before burning, not after.

7. Dead/Bricked DVD Drive

- Chances are, it's probably not bricked. Check out the official JungleFlasher Tutorial for help.

http://www.360mods.net/JungleFlasher/JungleFlasher.pdf

8a. What type of DVD drive do I need to rip my 360 games?

- You will need a DVD Drive that can support Kreon Firmware, or a 360 DVD Drive flashed with 008 Firmware or iXtreme 1.6

8b. What DVD Drives support Kreon Firmware?

- There are only 8 PC DVD Drives that support the reading/ripping of original 360 game discs, with Kreon 1.00 Firmware.

Samsung Drives
SH-D163A (SATA - Older Model)
SH-D163B (SATA - Newer Model)
SH-D162C (IDE - Older Model)
SH-D162D (IDE - Newer Model)

HP Drives
TS-H353A (SATA - Older Model)
TS-H353B (SATA - Newer Model)
TS-H352C (IDE - Older Model)
TS-H352D (IDE - Newer Model)

8c. What type of DVD Drive do I need to burn 360 backups?

- As long as it is capable of burning DVD+R DL media, you are fine. Here are the top three brands I recommend.

-LG
-Samsung
-Lite-On

9a. What type of DVD Drive does my 360 have in it?

- Here is a simple image guide, that tells you how to check the model of your DVD Drive.

Images by 360Drives

9b. Can my DVD Drive be flashed/modded?

- Yes, all current DVD Drives can be flashed with iXtreme Firmware.

10a. I am using Vista, how do I manually install PortIO32?

- Here is a very detailed install with pictures by nickthepick at Se7enSins.
http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox-360...io32-vista.html

10b. I am using Windows XP, how do I manually install PortIO32?

- 1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open the "Add Hardware" wizard. If you are using Windows XP's default "Category View" for the Control Panel, this is done by clicking on "Printers and Other Hardware" and under "See Also" on the left, click "Add Hardware".
3. The wizard typically displays a screen explaining what it is used for. Click Next to continue.
4. The wizard may automatically scan for new hardware. The scanning will not detect anything related to PortIO32.
5. You may be asked "Have you already connected this hardware to your computer?" Regardless of whether you have installed any cards yet, click Yes.
6. You will be shown a list of the hardware already installed in your computer. Scroll all the way down and select "Add a new hardware device"
7. You will be asked whether Windows should search for the new hardware. Select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list"
8. A list of hardware categories will be shown. Select "Show All Devices" (On some versions of Windows this may be called "Other")
9. Click the "Have Disk" button and point Windows to the "win\driver" directory of the PortIO32 distribution.
10. A list of drivers found in the directory you specified will be shown. Select the "PortIO32 Port I/O Driver" item and click Next.
11. Click Next again to "start installing your new hardware."
12. The files will be copied and installed. Click Finish to complete. You do not need to restart your computer.

10c. I am not using Vista or XP, how do I manually install PortIO32?

- Scroll about half way down the page, and you will see an Installation section. This gives install instructions for most Windows OS.
http://www.winfordeng.com/products/portio32/

11. How do I clear my XBOX 360 HDD cache?

- FOR NXE DASHBOARD
1. Got to My Xbox
2. Scroll to the end and select System Settings
3. Select Memory
4. Press "Y" for Device Options
5. Type in this code with your controller "X,X,LB,RB,X,X"
6. CHoose YES

FOR "BLADES" DASHBOARD
1. Go to the System Blade
2. Select Memory
3. Press "Y" for Device Options
4. Type in this code with your controller "X,X,LB,RB,X,X"
5. Choose YES

12. I have been asked to do a DashBoard Update. Will this effect my flashed XBOX 360/DVD Drive?

- No, DashBoard updates do not effect the Firmware on your XBOX 360 DVD Drive.

13a. What Firmware do I need for Wave 4 games?

- Wave 4 games with boot with iXtreme 1.51 and 1.6 (1.6 needs Activation.iso)

13b. If is safe to play Wave 4 games online?

- As of right now, I would only suggest playing a backup of a Wave 4 game online if you made the backup yourself, so you know it is from an original. Other than that, I would not suggest it until a new iXtreme Firmware with strict Wave 4 support is released, or until ABGX360 is update to recognize Wave 4 games.

If anybody has anymore that would be of use, please post them and I will add them to the first post, and show credit by posting your username.

Good post, hopefully it will be stickied. I would add to FAQ 6 that a common reason for games showing up as DVDs is incorrect layer break, although if you run through ABGX this will fix it.

I will add that. Some people don't stealth check their games until after they burn them so I might want to add that too. Also gonna add compatible Kreon drives.

You should add 'How Do I Know If I'm Banned from Xbox Live' (error code Z: 8015 - 190D).

I would add that if you get banned, only your console gets banned and you can still use your harddrive and so on on a new console.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

They are not that pricey. The difference is like 50 cents per disc or cheaper if you can find good deals...

cheez, Here is a link to the VIA 5.30c RAID driver. Used for Hitachis over WinAPI in Jungle Flasher. This driver would require a manual install through device manager.

VIA 5.30c Driver: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NKWNS2OZ

To remove the driver for the BenQ/Lite-ON/Samsung or to use PortIO for Hitachi in JF:

1. Disable VIA card in Device Manager.
2. Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers and remove "viamraid.sys" or "vsmraid.sys".
3. Re-enable VIA card in Device Manager.
4. Re-Boot PC.

Damn, good one leerage lol.

This is a great post, I wish they had posts like these back in the ps1 hacking days. Tremendous idea and great initiative cheez_cs.

Even though everybody here (except the newbies) knows that come game time, somehow in this god green earth, the same goddamn questions are gonna be asked. But hey, more fuel for flaming the newbs. Now its gonna feel really great to flame a newborn especially with this flame protectant fail-safe post.

ps. Dont forget to always burn at 2.4x newbies!
pss. Im patiently waiting like a shark on the prowl for this question to pop up, "Whats a sticky???" pffffffffff lol

Cheez,

Here is the manual install for PortIO32. The instructions included where from the JF team, but no support for Windows Vista or Windows 7. So I added them into the txt.
