question, i've got a 360 with a benq drive in it. i want to update the old ixtreme firmware (i think it has 1.4 on it) to the latest. but i do not have the original firmware saved. can i just use the jungleflash tutorial and backup the old ixtreme 1.4 bios and use that to flash the new 1.6 bios. off course the 1.4 bios has the dvd key in it, but do i need to revert to the original firmware?

a question on the side note,

why do you have to revert to the original firmware to update an old ixtreme firmware with a newer? doesn't it only have to compare and read the dvd key from the 'old' firmware into the new firmware?

IFAIK, you don't need the original firmware with a Benq, you can just upgrade from 1.4 to 1.6. Its only Hitachi's you need the original firmware.

all right, thanks for the info. i'll give it a try(hoping not to kill my drive).

if someone can explain why the hitachis need to be reverted to the old firmware, i am appreciated. is it enough to flash it back to the original firmware, the ones that is distributed with the jungleflasher pack and use the ixtreme firmware that was on the drive(the one that holds the particular dvd key) to put the dvd key back into the original firmware. i was just wondering how to update a hitachi that has an old ixtreme firmware (lets say 1.4) to a new ixtreme firmware if you don't have your original firmware backed up (f.i. if you paid someone to do the firmware flash for you),

yes you can just update using jungleflasher, no need to restore it...

i think you can get the orig firmware from xbins,,i know if you download toolbox,,its in a folder call orig firmware,,you just have to read whats in the htiachi now,,do this through toolbox,,copy the keys to the orig firmware and the restore it to the drive,,then read the drive again with the orig firmware,,,then flash the hitachi as if its the first time with 1.6,,i think the reason why you have to restore it because,,before you flash it with ixtreme,,you have to patch the firmware,,if you dont you will brick,,and thats not good,,hitachi drives are the worst to flash and reflash,,but they are a good drive if you leave them alone,,,

BenQ/Lite-ON/Samsung do not need restored to original firmware when updating. Just the dump the firmware, spoof the info to the new iXtreme, and flash.

Hitachi must be restored to original firmware before updating to new. If not, the drive will be rendered useless.

I upgraded a Hitachi 78 from 1.4 to 1.51. I used toolbox to flash it to 1.4 and then i used jungleflasher to upgrade it to 1.51. you dont have to download any orgnal firmwares.
1-you need 1.51 for the hitachi
2-Place it in the firmware folder
3-in jungle flasher goto Hitachi GDR-3120 tab
4-click on restore firmware
5-click on Flash iXtreme
you have updated a hitachi from 1.4 to 1.51 =)
