VLC 1.0 now available

Videolan has announced the official launch of VLC media player 1.0.0, codenamed Goldeneye.
The Videolan site says the new update includes the following changes:
* Free, Open Source and cross-platform
* Independant of systems codecs to support most video types

* Finer speed controls

This is a must have program. Plays everything I throw at it and even password protected files that do not play in windows media player to find out its no video at all.

People constantly bang on about how VLC is the only player that you just install and it allows you to play anything.
Ahem..... I beg to differ...
K-Lite Codec pack is small, light-weight and comes with a customized version of Media Player Classic that is specifically designed for people looking to play media files on a PC.
Aside from playing just about everything just as well as VLC (with the exception of streaming video)you also get several tools for encoding/decoding, tweaking, splitting, AC3, FFDshow, etc. etc.
In short, it is the perfect tool (incl. MPC Home Cinema vers.) for playing all video files, subtitles, HD, AC3, DTS, etc.
With the bonus of all the tools for more advanced users that VLC doesn't have., and at about the same download size.
Single file install and self-configuring, forget codecs, or tweak away if your a video nut.

I use both K-Lite (used it for years) and VLC too. Having Media Player Classic via K-Lite and also having VLC, i don't find the need to install anything else.

Hey old fart(creaky) and jemmers what is the best codec pack these days?? Klite still??
Klite dose not always make MPC run FLV's correctly.... everything else runs fine... oh ya is there anything that can play a HD high res video at a lower resolution so it plays better on a lower spec PC or are you pretty much forced to convert the file down?

I've never had a problem running .flv files in VLC Zip. As for the HD scaledown... Well, the new VLC 1.0 claims it can run most HD formats (see above), have you given that a go?
I just installed it so I've yet to see for myself. I've always used Cyberlink for Blu-rays, but that could change.
I just tried it on a 720p file and it scaled down just fine...
I get the K-lite mainly as an insurance for various programs that seem to exploit the codecs, as VLC's are internal.
Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

will the scaling down effect make it play like a SD video in trems of hardware power being used?
I got me a 100$ ASUS eee PC the intel 900Mhz celery CPU aint the best for for running HD video, like I got it for it but it would be nice if I could just toss on soem vids and crap and take it with me. converting takes time....
funny thing is VC can't even play a HD video on it where MPC can only sound and subttile is out of sync.

I'll get back to you Zip... wifey has a EeePC 1000H (great machine, so cute!), it has the Atom 1.6 CPU, which is comparable to the 900 Celery (supposedly)- the graphics is the 945 chipset and I pretty sure yours would be the 915 set. It's the best I can do...
OzMick has a closer model to your's... running it in Linux tho I think.

got this so I can write anywhere I go, tho I am going to have to toss a 90$ 32GB SSD add on into it and mabye 2GB(28$) of ramm it has 1 GB now, I'll try reselling for 250 or so on ebay if no takers I'll keep it till I can afford a real stylus HP laptop :P
just need a simple and cheap but word07 capable lappy to get me threw a few years, if it can paly video great, if not meh thats fine as well.

btw thanks, on dailup right now(at uncles for a few days) trying to do 10 different things and recalling why I paid 150$ a month for a year for Hughes net once upon a time.... ggrrrr I swear if he wants me to house sit free food is not going to cut it :P

Hi Zip, just tried a Blu-ray .iso mounted on VirtualCloneDrive in VLC... no luck. I had no joy playing it over a wireless "g" network to the EeePC or trying it on a desktop. I can get DVD .isos playing fine over the network but I can't get anything but stereo out of VLC (on the desktop I use SPDIF to a receiver) i.e. no 5.1. No luck with MPC either (dunno about the sound- have to experiment more).
So it's back to something else for those type of files. Perhaps it's me maybe I am doing something wrong, dunno...
However, for anything else I'll still cheerfully recommend VLC- suppose as long as it's stereo (ProLogicII maybe).
On a better note I could cheerfully play 1280 x 720 .wmv (in stereo) on the EeePC both wireless and using a USB stick (this one is formatted in NTFS btw coz it's 16gig and I wanted it for large files). VLC had no trouble with scaling and used about 50% of the cpu.
Don't cry "Üncle!"...Free food is free food :P
PS: You only need to upgrade the RAM with 533DDR so it's cheaper.

All I have to say is all of you using Klite codecs package don't have Phantom efx casino games installed on your system. You wouldn't have Klite.

In the past I used both KLite and CCCP. I liked CCCP a bit more. Now I don't even use any of them. VLC plays well all the media types that I like. No need for more.

Perhaps you should try just the/a basic pack- as I said I have it in case an app needs it.
I might just give CCCP a go.

Plus I just found out the battery is not holding a charge I think this thing is going to get sent back, I might try for a 300$ lappy that has a crappy nividia 6xxx or better chipset in it >>

EeePC701, that means the Intel G915 chipset. Well that is disappointing that it won't work, even with the VLC. I kid you not, since we had our 1000H, five friends went out and bought one after seeing how well it performed... including my mother-in-law!
I'm almost certain that it performs better than a Celery 900- tho it's not meant to... In basic ordinary applications it doesn't seem far behind a decent desktop e.g. yes, FF will take a bit longer to start but once it's going... meh (we leave the thing in standby anyway). Hell, it has no problems running Photoshop CS4!... M-I-Law insisted that it be installed and much to my surprise it performed excellently.
I'm quite blown away with how nice it is to use, sorry to sound like an ad people. (Tho I'm f*cked on how to get the inbuilt webcam working properly.)
There are the Asus N10* models (10.2" screen) that have a separate (switchable, for power saving) nVidia GPU GeForce 9300M chip. I'd be so tempted to get one for myself if I could think of a decent reason to get it lol. But I guess you're not cashed up enough to afford one. They seem to be plummeting in price tho, as it's an area of hot competition. $749 Australian for the N10E is the cheapest I could find, surely you could do better in the States.

Jem.. realtek audio is a bag of crap.. just about every system which uses that driver has it overlaying their own take on an ac97 driver set... you usually have to find the right one by guesswork.. ask a dell repairer.

Everyone has their favorite media player, I guess. Mine's KMPlayer (ver. 2.9.3.1428).
Never liked VLC's GUI, either. Yeah, the program is fully functional, but looking good is important, too! :)

Maybe it is Varnull... but it's still pretty standard. It's onboard Monique's EeePc and another of my poots.
Usually it doesn't seem to give me any grief.
Still, I'll take what you say onboard and try to hunt down the "right" driver... maybe the audio drivers that they offer at the mobo site. (Normally I wouldn't touch a Dell btw.)

I am sending the EEE PC back, I have decided to blow up to 300ish$ on a Turion X2 notebook if I can find one at that price on ebay when I haz 300 ready to dash attack it.... which will prolby be next month.
No no the EEE PC is rather surprising in trems of power and size, but the battery issue and or it not being able to tell when its plugged in or charging has me worried enough to say screw it.

there were many sync isses with subs and audio same for MPC, but it was the battery issues that got me >< if I am going to have to spend 250 I might as well get a real laptop and have 250-350 ready for the dive. A Turion X2 with 1 or more GB of ramm a working HDD and a good ninvinda(8200, will take a crappy 6100...) chipset is the best I can hope for...
The only real thing that surprised me in a bad way for the EEE PC is there are not down tuning options to save power, like easily control brightness and CPU speed, other than that and well the crappyness of the 4400 battery its a great lil netbook I have reservations about sending back...
the Asus N10 looks nice but if I am going to blow a grand I'll get a HP Pavilion TouchSmart or equivalent, a tablet PC is my dream. :P
