Greetings all
I am writing here to request some assistance with a few queries I have regarding PS3 launch consoles, PS2 backward compatibility, and swap magic. I have a chance to purchase an NTSC PS3 launch console, 60GB, with full hardware PS2 backwards compatibility. However, I live in a PAL territory, which limits my options somewhat for PS2 games. Yes, I know there are 60GB PAL launch consoles available, however they go for unreasonable prices, and only have partial compatibility. Yes I could get a PS2, however space around my TV is at a premium, and I really cannot afford to have 2 consoles taking up physical space, when one should be able to perform functionality of 2, i.e the PS3 and PS2, and yes, I could import PS2 games, but there are many games that are available either new or second hand in my home country that would likely work out much cheaper than getting them from other parts of the world.

I have recently been researching PS3, Swap Magic, and USB Advance for running game ISOs from USB drives. While that is certainly one option, I'd rather not have the load times associated with USB 1.0/1.1 data transfer, as I may end up playing games with FMV that were released for the PS2 in the future. After doing more research, I found this video on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6QgMOHpiuc which talks about something totally unrelated, but uses software that could possibly help me achieve what I would like to do. In the video, the video author uses cdloader running from a USB drive to boot a PS2 demo disk, after firstly loading swap magic. What interests me here, is that he managed to eject the swap magic disk, insert the PS2 demo disk, and boot the disk once cdloader was loaded. I would have thought that the PS3 would have returned to the XMB when this was done. But I digress.

After seeing this video, I thought I could use cdloader to boot either an original or backup copy of a PS2 game from the PS3's drive. However, the video author states in several comments that cdloader is unable to play backup games, or games from different regions. However, I still got to thinking about whether cdloader, or a similar elf file/program could do what I would like, particularly if a backup/burnt PS2 game region was changed.

So for those of you who got bored of the above scenario and just want the questions, here they are.

1. If I wish to play PAL PS2 games on an NTSC PS3, is there a method either available, or in development, that would allow me to boot PS2 games from different regions without opening the PS3 and modding it/switching disks on the fly, and still use the original, or even a burnt/backed up copy of the game?
2. If not, am I stuck with using USB devices at USB 1.1 speeds to play PAL games on an NTSC PS2?

I am very much new to the PS3/PS2 scene, and may have confused things along the way with this post. If I have, please feel free to correct me. The answers to my above questions will very likely help me make the decision as to whether I get the PS3 or not.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice.

Ok, after more research, I have my answers. For those who are interested:

1. Due to the PS3 drive validating the disks when you insert them, there is no way other than opening the pS3 and the drive to swap disks to playbackups.
3. Yes, usb advance/usbloader with USB drives and ISOs is the only way to play PS2 games from another region.

So, now to work out whether the reduced USB 1.1 performance is worth it.
