We all know that it is impossible to play backups of PS3 games, but I was wondering why? What sort of copy protection do Sony use to prevent the use of backups (either stored on the HDD of burnt to blu-ray)? And finally, do we think the PS3 will remain un-hacked forever and what does this mean for the future of console gaming? Will the Xbox360 be the final chapter in console piracy?

Hypervisor on the console.
Encryption on the games, though people keep backing them up,which is pointless >.<

Doesnt matter anyway..a sufficient number of hackers (or perhaps its the quality of hackers, not quantity) are just not interested in the PS3 to do the grunt work necessary to break the encryption. In time it will, but probably not for quite a while (till after they have milked the others for all their worth)

There are plenty of "hackers" working on the PS3 and believe me,there is nothing wrong with the quality of them.

If there ever is a hack for the PS3 I hope it uses the OTHEROS and will allow you to load games from an external HDD and play then but have no online capability, and if you want to play online you have to play with a legit game (just my 2 cents). In the mean time you can back up ps3 games with SAK. I have found a scene pre website called orlydb.com and they have a PS3 section and the scene isn't even uploading that many games because of the lack of development in PS3 hacking. If it does get hacked Sony will immediatly push out an update requiring people to download it before they play any games though which is going to suck.

lol the reason that you dont see any games in the PS3 section is because the up loaders arnt morons,it has absoluty nothing to do with the lack of development in the PS3 scene, its due to the simple fact that all those PS3 games that are backed up on the net are rubbish.
SAK dosnt back games up properly,so they are worthless ISO's.

There are people working hard every day behind the scene, these guys have lives, jobs etc,all their spare time is put into trying to circumvent the PS3,so give them a break, they are doing the best they can,the security on the PS3 owns every other console available.

On another view, instead of moaning like ungrateful people,go and hack the PS3 yourself, you all seem to think its an easy job,so should have no problem doing it.

I'm not a complaining about the PS3 not being hacked I know its a very hard job, I was just stating that there is a lack of interest in it because the Ps3 could do 99% of things most modded consoles can do except play backups because of course Sony doesn't want people downloading games off of bittorrent and playing them. SAK does make proper ISOs you just have to merge the files that SAK outputs with a simple command prompt script then you can mount them on a virtual drive and view all the files. I have done this with NBA 2k9 and The Omen Blu-Ray disk.

LOL SAK does NOT make proper back ups of PS3 games, each PS3 game has encryption keys, which are needed in order to have a proper PS3 back up,SAK cannot get these keys,so you see the back ups are useless - No keys = failed back up,oh and the keys are different on each individual disc.

Do you mean keys as that are similar to how I can watch a Blu-Ray ISO made with SAK once I have it decrypted with AnyDVDHD?

Blu Ray movies are encrypted differently than the games, the keys are different,so no i dont mean the keys simmilar, when a PS3 game is backed up,a chunk of it is missing, people who have dev consoles can play back ups of games they have backed up themselves, that is how this was found out.

Wow I didn't know that. But I thought SAK made a bit for bit copy of the disk when it backs it up.

I think a better question would be when do you think we will see a exploit that will allow us into kernel access mode on the ps3? Since it uses the XMB as a user inter face there must be a way, right? What about the tiff exploit and usb loader?

I read a few places that there are test consoles that will play backups.
I'd like to know how to get my hands on one of those ;).

If the firmware, bios, etc of these test consoles could somehow be cloned onto a normal unit I think we could be in business.

Couldn't you just backup the drive from the "test unit" and put it on a thumb drive then "restore" the the test unit drive to any PS3. Wouldn't there be test unit firmwares on Bittorrent, Rapidshare, and Etc.

lol, there are back ups of test drives, demo drives, retail drives, saying that, you cant put a test firmware into a retail drive, its been said so many times, the PS3 has a Hypervisor,it detects everything.

They aren't restricted to the same security as a retail, saying that, having no Hypervisor, doesn't make the slightest bit of difference, you cant take a test firmware and put it on a retail.

I was suggesting that he go get it and dump his own decrypt it and go from there.....I view infectus as a PoC.

since ps3 uses blu ray disc and the disc can contain up to 50GB of data,
if they managed to develop a game that really takes up 50GB of data,
its really not practical torrent a 50GB game of the net
