I bought an open box 120GB HDD from bestbuy today for a steal at $70. It works fine and shows the correct amount of freespace when plugged in to the 360 so that is good and everything. It also came with the transfer cable but it is missing the 360 disc with the software on it.

I assume I can just use Xplorer360 to backup the 20GB and transfer it to the 120GB however I have seem to run into a problem. (or maybe I am just impatient)

I backed up the 20GB HDD and it created a bin file. I plugged in the 120GB and selected to restore the drive. It has been restoring for the past 5 hours and it has not progressed 1 bar since 4 hours ago. It is hanging on the 7th progress bar and is only about 1/6 of the way completed.

Should I have done something before? Did I do something wrong? Or does it take overnight for this to work..

I attempted to download the disc software and burn it on to a DVD but all that shows up is the 360 logo on a white background when I put it in the drive.

Why don't you just use the transfer cable as ms intended? (connect both hdd to the console at once).

You don't need the disc software?

I've never tried it out but I wouldn't think so (disk probably only contains nxe). Follow the tut on xbox.com (sorry I can't post link on my phone).

I WAS following the tutorial. It says to insert the disc. I have my 20GB drive in the console and the 120GB on the back USB.

Insert the included Hard Drive Transfer Disc into your Xbox 360 console's disk tray. Instructions appear on the screen.
Okay, I get what you mean now. Here's a link to download the disc
I'm not sure how safe that is though (first answer that came up on google).

Good news!

The new disc works great. Only 1 hour left to transfer everything.

So long as you have the 20gb backed up you should be fine, however once the transfer is complete your 20gb will be wiped of data, well that's what the microsoft manual says when using data transfer cable, also you can't use the data cable to transfer from the 120 to the 20, "stupid as"
