Hi there people,

I'm have already read a lot of posts here in the forum but i'm still with some questions. If someone can please help me, i'll apreciate that.

I bought my wii last week.. the system menu was 3.1E.. and after one upgrade it is now 4.1E.

What I need to know is that if even with a virgin 4.1E can I use the guide NEW AND IMPROVED WII SOFTMOD GUIDE ?

Should I follow all the steps?

Is there some kind of "backup" to the system that can me made in case something go wrong and so I can roll back to the last state?

What I want to do is to have the change to run backup games (burned or in some external drive/sd card).

I want also to run the Virtual console games.. can I do that?

If I do the mod, will I be able to use the news and weather channel anyway?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english.. need to practice a little more.

Any help will be appreciated... I really haven't found the right answers to my questions.

Thanks

I have read the guide, I can assure you that. And thanks for it, but I continue with some questions and don't want to break my wii, that's why I posted this.

Thanks anyway

Evidently you didn't read good enough. It says you need a Wii with 4.0/4.1 firmware. It also says to install Bootmii. If you don't know what Bootmii is then do a little research and find out.

Actually I read it all and still don't find all the answers to the questions I made. The time you have spend to tell me to read something that I already read could be more usefull if you can answer to my questions since it looks that you're a master on all this.

Yeah yeah, I'm a noob here at the forum, you can flame me, but this don't looks like the better way to help someone with a few questions (basic questions for you, not for me).

Regards, and again, thanks for your guide.

The fact is these questions are ask on a regular basis and can be answered by searching. I am a helpful person but there comes a time that others need to help themselves.

You can say i am flaming you all you want. but all I am saying is do a little search and you will find your answers.

From what I see in the forum you're really a helful person, and even I as a noob apreciate that and I'm not telling you that you "must" or "can" help me.

I'm just asking for some help that the search you have spoken didn't give me... search is able to give a lot of answers, but one is the opposite of the others.

Thats why I asked what I ask in order of your guide.

Thanks anyway. I'll continue to do my research and wait for some help.

Regards to all

Yes you can play wii ware if you do the softmod guide.
Yes you can use the softmod guide if you are on 4.1e
Yes you should follow all the steps in the guide. I also recommend following the guides linked at the bottom that tell you how to load backup games from the disc channel.

The guide for loading backups from the disc channel contains some information on bootmii and how to install and use it. I recommend doing all those steps as well. Bootmii is the backup to the wii system you asked about. The link and guide explain it all.

Yes you can still use the news and weather channels, and you can also play the backup games online.

In short start off with the new and improved wii softmod quide. Follow all the steps and yes it's ok on a 4.1e FW Wii. When that is done, go to the launch disc from the backup channel guide and install bootmii before you follow the steps in that guide. The guide actually recommends it, and links you to instructions for using and installing bootmii. After installing bootmii make a nand backup, and then go ahead and follow the steps in the guide for loading backups from the disc channel.

Then when that is done, install the USB loader stuff if you want and you will be good to go to play backups off of disc or off a portable hard drive, and you will also be able to install Vistual Console games and wii ware. These guides will install pre-loader on your wii where you can turn off disc updates which helps prevent against future updates from bricking your wii. Or you will always have the nand backup created by bootmii.

I have done all this on 4 different wii's now. Two with mod chips and two were virgin unmodded wii's. Worked like a charm all 4 times.

Now with all that said....

All these guides were created by the same guy giving you crap for asking the questions you could have found the answers to yourself. While I have not been doing this anywhere near as long as he has and dont mind answering these questions, he is right about what he said.

With just a little effort on your part you could have found all these answers yourself by simply reading other peoples posts with the exception of the news and weather channel working after softmodding. I dont recall anyone asking that question nor do i recall ever reading anything about it.

anyway, hope this helps you. Let us know if you try it out whether it works or if you experience any troubles. It will assist other users as they look for answers to their questions.

Hey dude,

Thanks a lot for your answer. I do know that doing a search will answer most of my questions. And I have searched, but as you can check also, some of the results give an answer opposite of the other. For a noob like me that doesn's want to brick my wii its a kind of scary, as I think you were when modding for the first the one of those 4 wii's.

I'll try to follow that guide as recomended, but I don't have wifi at the moment and in the following days.

Thanks again.

the guide will walk you through downloading the proper wad files manually if you dont have access to wifi. You simply store them on your SD prior to the hack and then you install them from SD card instead of from wifi.

I have tried that one time out of the three wii's i softmodded and it worked fine. It was actually faster as you wait for the file to download to your PC instead of waiting for the Wii to download the file. This way you are only waiting on the installation process, and not both installation and download.

The wifi process has less steps and feels more streamlined. I prefer that way, but they both work fine.

again, let us know please when you try it out what happens. Good Luck

Again, thanks for your answer. About the guide to do the mod offline are you refering to the OFFLINE DOWNGRADE/UPGRADE GUIDE at http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=144835?

Asking this because that guide don't work for 4.1 I suppose. I must run a prepare.bat file first but version 4.1E (my version) is not an option.

Thanks

You don't really need the Internet for the NEW AND IMPROVED GUIDE.

Google IOS38-64-v3610.wad and download it and place it at the root of the SD Card.

If you want GameCube support Google RVL-mios-v8.wad and download it and place it at the root of the SD Card.

After you download those 2 files and place them in the root of the SD card just follow the guide as normal. When you get to the cIOS install section choose WAD Install instead of Network install. When you get to the Gamecube section choose WAD Install instead of Network install.

The only other application that uses WiFi in the guide is IOS Downgrader. This downgrades and patches all IOS so Trucha Signed disc can run. If you want this option then you will need WiFi. But this is NOT a mandatory step you need to take. Backup disc will still launch as long as they have not been modified and trucha signed.

Again all of this is explained in the guide itself.

Well, I get back my router and now I have wifi in my place but with a slow spead.

Does someone knows if the files that the wii download when modding it are big or not so I can check if my connection can handle it?

Thanks in advance

here is my list items and there sizes(and i have the worst of slow speed, a dial-up connection at 26.6k)
wii firmware is usaly ~20mb
a ios is usaly no more the 2mb a
B2 is tiny
cIOS isnt much eather
so at 26.6 it will take about 2 to 3 hours
*make shur you have bootmii as boot2!!!*
Dont whana wait for 2 hours?

Download a program called WUFE (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/WUFE) , make shur you have bootmii as boot2 (for this is how i brick my wii) And try out your games and see if they got you files you are looking for...I know wii play has a old system menu 2.2 or somthing..and links crossbow has 3.0... if the game is cheep (like bold games) the usaly don't have any firmware and only 1 boot2/ios

BTW, i dont like reading big guides eather...i usaly can't comprehend it all...

Well, i followed the NEW AND IMPROVED WII SOFTMOD GUIDE and I modded my Wii.

I haven't installed yet the usb loader gx because I need to prepare first some usb hdd.

I haven't installed also the Bootmii because when installing HB it shows me that Bootmii can only be installed as IOS and from what I read... that is not the perfect way.

Can someone confirm me this? Also, when I want to install some wad file using wad manager, do I need to choose always any IOS version to use or can depeding of the wad file that could not be necessary?

Thanks in advance

You can still get a NAND backup even if you install Bootmii as an IOS. As for brick protection installing it as IOS is kind of pointless. But I would still install it and get a backup of your NAND.

For brick protection install Preloader .29 (if your on 4.1 firmware make sure you get a 4.1 firmware hacks.ini file for your region).

Thanks one more time for your quick answer larrylje.

I'll try so to install Bootmii and Preloader .29 so. As for usb loader gx there is some king of list of SD cards that can done that nand backup? I'm using a Transcend 2Gb to the mod. Can I use this SD and make the nand copy to this SD .

Also, from what I see it's better not to install any wad before having that nand backup. As I asked in the previous post "when I want to install some wad file using wad manager, do I need to choose always any IOS version to use or can depeding of the wad file that could not be necessary?"

Thanks in advance.

(sorry my bad english, need to practice a little more)

The default IOS should now be IOS249 for Wad Manager. It is perfectly fine to install all WAD with IOS249. So just keep it as default.

Is the SD Card a non-secure or is it SDHC?

If it is non-secure then you should have no issues with anything.

If it is a SDHC then the only issue you might have is loading the hacks.ini file for Preloader .29 when installing it.

What do you mean with non-secure?

It is a normal SD card, 2Gb. It isn't a SDHC card. Its the same SD that I use and will use to install bootmii and to do the backup if able.

Or should I have one SD just for the backup? I want to after do the backup transfer it to a CD or DVD to save it from some disaster.

Thanks again

If it isn't a SDHC SD Card then it should be fine.

So you should have no issues.

I have my NAND saved both on my PC and a DVD so it is a smart move to do what your thinking.

Here I'm again with one more doubt.

From what I check, I can only install bootmii as IOS on my wii. But from what I read bootmii as IOS don't let me use the power and reset buttons do use bootmii.

Can someone confirm me this please?

@bootmii website:

"
How do I control the BootMii menu without a WiiMote?

Use a GC pad in port 1 to navigate the menu. If you don't have one, you can use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select. You just need to briefly press each button. Note: a bug in BootMii/IOS currently prevents this from working, sorry.
"

Do I need to buy a GC pad? :|

Thanks in advance

i was only able to get the power button to toggle the options. I was unable to get reset to select them so i had to use a GC controller to play with bootmii and make a nand backup.

I did not read through the above post but if you installed bootmii as an IOS make sure you have preloader installed otherwise when you brick you will be uanable to load bootmii to reflash the nand. Preloader is needed if you install bootmii as an IOS. Not to make the nand backup but to help load bootmii in the event of a system brick.

You can find a generic GC Controller used at gamestop, or via ebay, or you can pick up a 25.00 one at a best buy. They will be aftermarket but they should work fine. You might even find a real GC one used at Gamestop. I've seen em for around $10.00

I was just reading this and it got me nervous.
Im new to all this modding stuff and just trying not to screw up my wii.

I installed bootmii as boot2 and made a backup on my sd card. I actually used it today because a wiimote i got from ebay screwed up my wii channels.
But what is this preloader .29?
What is it and do I need it?

Thanks
