I read a tutorial somewhere that said that it's necessary to boot from a floppy in order to access the 360's dvd drive. If a floppy drive is not available, is it ok to boot from an IDE drive such as a CD drive or an ls 120?

You can put DosFlash on a floppy drive but it is more reliable to have it on a bootable USB drive. I have a tutorial linked in my signature on how to make a bootable USB drive.

There is also a CD that had programs to help you flash your drive and write to a NTFS drive, but I think that has been moved to USB also.
