I did a round of flashing for my friends the past weekend, but 1 of them is having a problem. He has a BenQ drive. I live 4 hours away so I can't just go check (but I am going back soon), but he says that he can play originals fine, but when he puts a backup in there, he says it gives him a dirty disc error and he has to eject over and over to get it to finally read. When it does, he says he can only play for about 10-15 minutes and then it gives a dirty disc error or freezes.
I know I only made him 1 test backup to show him how to do it, and I'm not sure if he's only using that 1 or if he has made others. My first thought is that it may be the disc itself, but I've never had a bad disc out of any of the ones I've made (I use verbatim). Let's say that after I get him to try it out on another xbox and try others in his, and he has the same problem, would you say it's a dvd drive going bad? Just trying to figure out if he should blow the cash for a new drive.
If he can test the game out on another flashed console and it doesn't have Dirty Disc Errors, then it is an issue with the drive. Maybe the laser needs clean and that is all. If it does turn out to be a laser issue, the BenQ lasers are available and are easy to replace.
I had a BenQ that I flashed and it kept giving Open Tray. Tried doing a POT Calibration but that didn't work. Ended up replacing the laser and it solved the problem.
