for some reason it will only play verbatim discs but my memorex wont read or if it does says unreadable

The laser is probably struggling to read through the crappy dye of the Memorex disc. I suggest purchasing some Verbatim (made in Singapore). As a last resort, you could try a POT calibration on the laser.

I would get some Verbatims, rather than doing the POT calibration.

would theses be on Verbatim DataLifePlus 8.5GB 2.4X DVD+R DL White Inkjet Printable 20 Packs Disc - Retail

Not sure about the inkjet printable ones. I would just get some regular Verbatims made in Singapore. Some have said India dye is OK too.
