I guess it depends on how your PC is "connected" to your PS3. I'm assuming you are streaming from your pc to your ps3. If that is the case, I recommend using PS3 Media Server. Its a FREE Java based streaming program that has ALL the perks other retail versions have and even some that others dont. Just google it and download the latest version and you should be able to go in minutes. You can even transcode on the fly as it will utilize all the assets you asked about installing on the ps3. You can even transcode .mkv files on the fly pretty well as long as your pc is up to snuff. If you are already using this program, you might want to check out Ryu77's "ps3 compatible video creation" thread for converting some of the files you are having issues with.
I use PS3 media server and it is the BEST option i have found. It doesnt hog resources either so your pc should be able to run it no problem.
when you are searching through your pc via you ps3 you should see 2 versions of the film you want to play... the regular icon with the films name, and a "transcode" folder right above it that has the films same name. inside it is the same film only transcoded..... if that isnt available, or isnt there, or you are already using this method and still having problems, you may need to convert the videos.....or unfortunately redownlod them.
ok thx a lot hunt, i thought i may have to do that, i was wondering can i put my divx movies on an external HDD and plug it into a usb slot on ps3, would the movies play that way too ?
Yes you can. Many other cheaper dvd players are also coming out that can do the same, just be sure they say they are Divx certified and have a USB port. I saw a Samsung dvd player the other day at Walmart for $64.00
