Hey, I was wondering is it possible I could install linux and uise it as a computer to do work and stuff as well as use it as a games console. If I can Can I install XP on it and use Microsoft word and so as a normal computer. If you can and have tested it is it fast enough?

You can install Linux on the PS3 there are plenty of guides around. You could emulate XP on Linux but it would probably be slow, but you don't need to as you could just use a Linux word processor.

Emulating XP on YDL.... You better off with a $20 computer that holds 256MB of RAM and powered by a PI processor. Linux already comes with OpenOffice, which is exactly like Microsoft office, except OpenOffice is free.

On a side note if you're asking this because you're considering buying a ps3 you will have to get a ps3 phat as the slim has removed the option to install linux.

Yup that's true! I'm actually surprised on the slim selling so well around where I live... They are sold out of it at the local GameStop. I was gonna sell my 80GB to get the slim, but decided not to...

All this talk about how emulating XP is pointless is true, but has anyone tried running Windows 2000? I bet it would run ok.

It would have to be emulated from within linux...even on a high-end PC with lots of ram, it would still not run very fast. The PS3 has only 512MB total (between video and system ram), and the only way I know of to increase this is to use high speed USB cards (not as fast as real ram...but still much faster than the HDD).
IMHO, there is no reason to emulate windows on the PS3...the only real advantage of running Windows is the games and a few big-time apps that use lots of memory. Either way, 512MB is not enough memory.

I don't think it's even worth installing XP on the PS3. I mean Windows is a great OS, but for the PS3 linux is your best bet. Like KillerBug said, it only has 512MB RAM shared with both video and system.
