So it was late one night and i was doing the occasional low balling thing on ebay, and i acutally won one. So i was thinking, what could possibly be wrong with this box. The auction says ms sent it back without repair. Maybe the security sticker was messed up or maybe the serial numbers didn't match.

Well i received it today and took it apart. Looks like it was taken apart and "fixed" by a kid that had no idea what he was doing.

Aside from a few plastic tabs broken off, the fan was cut and spliced into the dvd 12v wire. So i had to repair the fan and the dvd power cable.

I mean look at this....

The frustration didn't end there, I flipped over the xbox and noticed the xclamps have been replaced with the short screw xclamp replacement method. Taking the heatsinks off i found about a whole 3 gram tube of thermal paste.....

So i'm speechless at this point, got the thermal paste on my clothes somehow....it was a mess. Even after i removed the white thermal paste i found some ms thermal paste/pad left on the gpu.

Anyway i got it all cleaned up, fixed the dvd 12v wire with solder and a heatshrink tube and everything's good.

The box had error 0020 and it's now fixed and in the testing phase. It had the old dash on it, but i updated it to the nxe and it's not banned from live.

I'll probably change the ring of light and maybe add some other leds or something to it to make it "look cool" and sell it on craigslist.

Anybody else find these type of repairs or know the site that gave this bad advice? We all know not to pull power from the dvd drive.

LOL.. the fan was rigged to the 12volt on the DVD drive power cord.

Yeah... somebody didn't know what they were doing.

Hackjob repairs are the norm on ebay. I am used to seeing all kinds of stuff like that. The only thing that still pisses me off is the snaps on the back of the case. Lately, all of them I get look like they were opened with small icepicks. I mean if these people are going to be opening a ton of 360's and become a "repairer" cant they spring the $5 for a decent tool to open a case without fucking it up?

yeah the little clips on the back of this one were fine but i've gotten a few that were completely mangled where the tool didn't work and i had to use the "pry method" to get the damn thing apart.

This repair just makes me laugh though, he had wayyy too much thermal paste on there and it probably wasn't transfering heat to the heatsink that well so he ran 12v off the dvd drive to the fan.

Then he probably sold it to the guy i bought it from and they thought they could send the hackjob in to ms....like they wouldn't realize.

I sell xboxs on ebay regularly. I wont sell a red ringed console though. I usually just fix the laser or replace a drive and that is about it. I have bought some off ebay to use for parts and I have ran into many of the consoles like that one. It is amazing what some people do to them.
I think I saw that one actually, was that the one that was still in the box that microsoft returned it in. If it is that is hilarious. How do people think they are going to get something like that repaired. Microsoft does inspect them a little before they ship you another one.

Still it was worth it because it was under $40.

Wow... that seller is very deceiving. The console looks in good condition. Even though it is listed as "AS-IS", definitely trying to rip somebody off.

Heh he probably thought he'd make a rudimentary "whisper talismoon fan" upgrade to his current one. I wonder if it actually worked xD. That is an incredible amount of paste although I must admit half of the x-clamp fix guides on the net arn't specific enough about the amount you're supposed to use. They're all to quick to shout "USE TEH ARCTIC SILVERZ FIVE" and thats it, nothing on application.

Yeah i usually bid pretty low and if i don't win it then i find another one.

I think they must have used some tutorials from some site i've never heard of. I would think xbox-scene and llamma would be the main two xbox tutorial sites so how could you make such a mistake.

Here's a quote from llamma

Quote:
Next we need to apply a thin coat of thermal compound to the die. The old adage "a dab will do ya" definitely applies. Notice in the photo on the top the amount of compound we have used; this is more than enough. You are looking for a skim coat similar to the thickness of plastic wrap. The photo on the bottom is a example of what you should NOT do. Silver based compounds can have adverse effects when in contact with electrical components not to mention the thermal compounds efficiency is greatly reduced when too much is applied.

I don't see how you can put that much thermal paste on....i've fixed a hell of a lot of 360s and today i just used up the rest of my first 3.5 gram tube of as5. Of course i've used it on regular xbox's, computers and a few laptops. That 360 reminded me when i took apart a 360 power supply... That sucker is just filled with thermal paste.

And that's after i cleaned it up a bit

You think too much paste on the CPU and GPU is bad? My buddy bought a 360 off ebay and it looked like they took a cocking gun to the entire board. Gawd awful, he sent it back to the buyer as they didn't list the condition properly.
