I know that there are a couple of threads similar to this one but since I'm a "newbie" I can't reply to them :(
I was going about my business fixing my overheating Xbox when my screwdriver slipped and made a tiny scratch on the motherboard (I had removed the x-clamps). Instead of using the correct size screwdriver I continued screwing and the screwdriver slipped again and made a larger scratch. I didn't loosen any part on the motherboard just these two scratches and they didn't cross anything seemingly important.
I plugged everything in but i still had the 3RROD. My question is: is this good (would i get another constellation of lights if I'd ruined my motherboard) or does it not tell me anything.

Did you overheat the GPU after you got the X-Clamp replacement on?

as long as you didnt damage and solder leads, you should be ok. soulds like the x-clamp fix didn't take properlly.

I actually overheated both the CPU and GPU (I just unplugged the fans). I don't think that the scratches have damaged my xbox, severely, because I've managed to get it working but only for about 30-60 minutes before it freezes.
Does anyone know If I still can send it in to Microsoft despite the removed warranty sticker? I wouldn't mind it too much if I had to pay (a small fee).

Could someone explain the Arctic Silver 5 craze please? I don't see why everyone is using it; does the 360 break from other thermal compounds (my insecurities, as I didn't use it...)

Even though my username lends itself to ridicule the warranty had expired and I had made sure that I could put the sticker back, just in case (it'd already been off once so there was a new crappy sticker on it).
On other news I have found a brand new way of getting your 360 to work when the "x-clamp fix" fails you; place a desk fan on top of the heatsinks. Needless to say this method is less than practical as the my 360 now occupies an area threefold to what it should, makes twice as much sound, and is just generally twice as much crap as it should be.
Could someone please direct me top some reliable, quite fans which will replace the old 360 fans? I know a lot of people seem to be using the Whisper fans but I'm not gonna blindly believe the hype.
