During a blu-ray film, about 20 minutes into it, the video froze and I was brought back to the XMB stating "The video is invalid". I ejected the disc, checked for scratches (none) and put it back in. It gave me a "An error occured during start up" error. I then tried 5 ps3 games, all of them gave a start up error. DVD and ps2 games work perfectly though. This is where it gets weird.

I thought at first that the blu ray lens is dead. So i turned the ps3 off. 2 hours later i tried the film again and it worked but failed again 15 minutes into it. The symptoms repeated for the past 3 days. It seems after being left on for a while, the blu-ray lens fails.

Is this a sign of overheating or a bad blu-ray lens?

Additional notes:
-All dust has been removed from the system
-It sometimes reads blu-ray well after 15 minutes but ultimatly ends up failing.
-The blu-ray lens has been checked for damages of any kind (By me and none were found).
-All other ps3 function work perfectly.

Thank You!

Might not be the laser itself but rather the bluray board that's shot, I know I've seen similar symptoms in video cards and such that were on their way out.

I have the exact same issue with a ps3 i just brought.
DVD will play all the way no problems...Blu ray will not even load, gives me an error code and ps3 games start and then freezes. i cleaned the lens thinking that might be it...no help...i replaced the paste on the heat sinks...no help..i did notice that the PS3 is extremely hot though.
The games will start and then freeze and after a sec or two the screen will go blank and then return back to the XMB...any help is greatly appreciated ..

After countless hours of exchanging parts with my personal PS3, i discovered that the problem i thought was an overheating issue, turns out to be nothing more than just a faulty laser...I hope this helps someone ...

Boneyard did you have an older model (I have a 80gb BC PS3) or one of the newer 40gb/80gb/160gb models

I JUST got my ps3 back from repair (almost 2 months now), turned out it was a faulty blu-ray board. Due to dust cleaning, the warranty was void so it cost £150 ($249-ish)to repair. canuckerz was right!
