Updating Wii Firmware for US Wii in Australia

I hope someone can help. I have a US Wii but I live in Australia. The on-line firmware updates do not seem to work, as it stops downloading at the same time every time I try. I have recently purchased some games that do not load and the clerk at the shop said it may be related to the firmware updates. Is this possible or true?
Does anyone have any advice how I can update the firmware on-line? Do I need to mask my IP address, or change it to a US IP address, or is there an easier way?

It shouldn't matter where you are when doing a normal update to the system.

Sometimes updates can take a bit long. They can act like they have stalled but in reality they didn't.

I would start the update again and let it sit for a while.
