Ok guys I need a little information on how to format a 360 hard drive. I saw a snapshot of a 360 with a 500 gb hard drive and that is my quest as well. I have a data transfer cable on the way here but I was not sure how to go about formatting the hard drive before I transfered the information from the 20 gb to the 500 gb. Sure would appreciate some help on this one and I thank you kindly.

As of yet, there is no way you can have anymore than a 120gb hdd, the picture must have been edited.

Well, I think you can, but the 360 limits it at 120 gb iirc. Also, I think you can only use the wd1200bevs hard drives.

Well, you can connect a 500gb hdd, but the 360 will only recognise 120gb.

Ok so I found the wd1200bevs hd on ebay for 47 bucks. How would I go about formatting the drive or will the 360 automatically format the drive like the ps3 does?

Well after spending a little bit of time googling this is what I found:

?Start your Xbox 360 console without a disc in the disc tray.
?In the System section of the Xbox 360 Dashboard, select Memory to view the Storage Devices area.
?In the Storage Devices area, select Hard Drive if you want to format the hard drive or other storage device, and then press the Y button on your Xbox 360 controller or on the remote control.
?In the Device Options area, select Format. You receive the following message:
This will delete all content on this device. Do you want to continue?
?To format your Xbox 360 Hard Drive, select Yes. (NOTE: you maybe asked to enter in your console Serial Number, this is normal depending on the version of the dashboard you have and the SN can be found at the back of the console above the power plug)

Now does this sound right and will it work? Has anyone ever followed this procedure so I will know that it is good to go and thanks again for all the help.

Lol, no. Unfortunately the wd1200bevs hdd upgrade is alot harder than that. Here's a video tut or if you prefer, here's a text version. (those tuts are the first results in google, they may be kind of dodgy, just search "xbox 360 hard drive upgrade tutorial" for more results).

Flashing the WD 120gb is fairly easy now the hddss.bin is easily available. Just make sure your chipset is compatible.

Create a backup of the smaller drive before transfer,i've yet to transfer my data from the 60 to the 120 but apparently the smaller drive will be automatically wiped once it's done using the data cable,if you read the instructions that's what it says will happen, worse still you can't transfer data the other way to a smaller drive,so it would need to be done by comp

chris4160 I appreciate your input on this it looks like I would be better off paying a few dollars more and getting one that is pre-formatted. Yeah I did not think it was as simple as what I posted. LOL and thanks to everyone for the input.

If you need to make a backup of any data saves etc i used a unit called "usb minispy" it plugs directly into the hdd or you can use the PCI card thingy that comes with it,you should be able to find a similar type of unit over your way,the advantage is it comes with a,IDE,SATA & 2.5 IDE adapter, basically a 3 way adapter, handy when testing hdd's on the bench obviously it has a power adapter as well
