I will try and be brief. I have a PS3, sony STR-DG720 receiver, and newer sony lcd TV. Can't recall the model. I have been using it with the HDMI cable going thru receiver for both audio and video. Its been working fine.

THe problem arose when I decided to bring the PS3 downstairs and use it on my older rear projection TV that gets 1080i with a DVI input. So, I tried to use the HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver, and then used a HDMI-to-DVI cable from the receiver to the TV. I put the PS3 settings at HDMI output for 1080i and the audio settings at HDMI. It tells me that the "device does not support HDMI output", when I attempt to put the sound output settings on the PS3 to HDMI. Any thoughts? Thanks.

As far as i know, DVI doesnt carry audio signals.
So you may need to adjust your settings to output audio through the fibre optic output of your PS3 to the receiver.
