Q: Is there any way of flashing the drive without opening my pc to get to the sata slots? Will a sata-to-usb work fine?

Q: How hard is it? Is it quite hard to get right? Or is it quite straight forward as long as you understand the instructions? Is it fiddly?

Q: If I mess it up, can I rectify my mistakes?

Q: Where can I get weird stuff to make it work such as this probe or something like that.

If I can get these questions answered, hopefully I can make some decent headway on getting the stuff to get started by the 4th week of summer holidays. It's a stock drive if that helps.

1: Opening a PC case is simple compared to opening a 360 case. You must open the case and use a SATA slot. I guess some people have made SATA-->USB adapters work, but supposedly they are much more likely to give problems.

2: It's not very difficult as long as you've read up on the subject and know the steps. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it's not bad.

3: With all of the different model DVD drives except for Hitachi, mistakes are pretty easy to fix. With Hitachi drives, a mistake = bricked drive.

4: The cheapest way to get a probe is to make one, so that's what I did. It wasn't difficult, and if you've ever messed with building anything electronic before, it is easy to do. There are tutorials around to guide you. I believe one popular brand of probe is CK3, if you don't want to build one.

Hope that helps.

Oh yeah, one extra thing, there is a brand new version of the Lite-On drive that has yet to be hacked. I don't remember the model number, but you might want to make sure that's not the type you have. This is only on the newest of Xbox 360s.

Thanks qwert. The only reason I wanted to do it sata to usb drive is because my perants may not approve (they're 40 year old technophobics) but if it is that easy once I get clued up I'll be able to do it in an afternoon when they're out. I'll probably buy a probe, I'll look into that CK3. 1 more thing. Does newest count as a month old?

Thanks pal,
James.

I think that would be best. From what I hear the USB-->SATA route is a crap shoot.

Yep, if you have a Lite-On in a one month old 360, it is probably the newest, unhackable (for a little while anyway), drive. You will have to open up your Xbox to find out for sure. The model number is something like 83350 or something?

You may be out of luck for now. Supposedly the hack for this new drive is forthcoming, though. I guess the thing that makes it 'unhackable' is that it won't easily give you the drive key, which you use the probe for. Not sure if it's encrypted or what.

DG-16D2S with 74850C firmware is able to have the dvdkey dumped and flashed with iXtreme.

DG-16D2S-09C with 83850C firmware is the "unhackable" as of right now. Iriez post for XS 7-31-09:

The details of the solution have drastically changed in the past few weeks. I would expect an announcement fairly soon(within a few weeks) as to the way we will implement the new IX.

Okay. What I'll do is open my xbox using a tut and check wheter or not it is an unhackable Lite-On; The distinguishing information is on the top of the drive where the stickers are, correct? If it isn't a new one I'll crack right on with getting stuff and getting started and is it is a new one I'll just keep checking till there is a hack. Thanks guys.

No problem. Yes, the firmware will be on the sticker of your Xbox. Good luck.
