Helping the Wii Noobs go pro, can you help?

It has been a long week of a rollercoaster installing homebrew and learning about the unit more and more daily.
After installing all this software and patches and such, I ask this of the community.
Can we all get a breakdown on what is what and what program does what and how to use it basically.

The helpers here are great and I enjoy this site very much.
I would like to know in a simple breakdown on what is the current IOS and what should I be running at and how do I maintain it?

Any programs that are a "must have" and why.
I just want to get the questions out of the way and maybe shed some light on many new "noob" users too.
