I also want to know what's the typical cost of fixing one, either by a 3rd party of if I were to do it myself. How much are the special tools, additional parts, replacements?

A RRoD XBOX 360 with HDD, all accessories, and good warranty seal, should run around 100$ or so on eBay. Give or take some. Elites would definitely cost more. If you buy a 360 without accessories, HDD, or a good warranty seal, you are going to pay less obviously.
It shouldn't cost you any money to fix them because with a good warranty seal, you should be sending them to Microsoft and making them do the work. :)
If you buy one without a warranty seal, you are going to need screws and washers for the x-clamp fix, thermal paste, etc to fix the 360. There are plenty of guides out there.

you can buy a complete system with RROD and a good seal on ebay for 60-70 all day long. there is no way i would pay 100 for one.

So most people state that they have had RROD and have been fixed etc, then sell them on ebay?
I doubt there's much money that could be made from that?

$50-$80 for fixing it. Out of curiosity how many hours does it normally take to fix the RROD?

If its the Xclamp fix, shouldn't be no more than a hour. If it needs a re-flow, I'm not sure how long that takes but you do need specific (expensive) kit.
I would recommend looking for ones that are quite new, with warranty sticker intact and let M$ do the hard work. There are quite a lot of peeps that do not know M$ have extended the warranty to 3 years for RROD.

Not a terrible return but equally not that good. However, for a student or someone trying to make a buck in the recession, it all helps

Gotta admit, I wouldnt bother. I could end up buying 5 un-reparable xboxs and lost a few hundred quid.

in the past two or three years ive been doing this and made some pretty good money at it. just have to keep your eye out for a good buy and make sure to ask the seller if the seal is intact and if the console has been opened. if they say no seal/opened dont even think about buying it.

Thanks. Might start doing it myself. If I can't fix it if it needs a reflow, I could always sell it on again.
