not really sure what burners work and what dont but i dont really want a internal because ill only have my laptop soon, any help appreciated?

Rather than get an external burner, which sometimes seem to cause problems, I'd recommend buying a good quality internal burner and then purchasing an external casing for it.

agreed, buy an internal burner and put it in an external case. as far as which one... almost all new internal dvd burners are the same and will get the job done, dont be fooled into paying a crap load of money. i picked mine up for 40$ 2-3 years ago, (that was dirt cheap then) and it works perfect to this day. just in case you are wondering, its a mad-dog burner.

True that. Good DVD drives are dirt cheap these days.

Not that I would know since I am still using a Sony DRU 710A that I bought several years back as my first DVD burner. I remember at the time dual layer burners were just barely becoming common and I was excited to get it as a feature on my burner. Glad I finally got a reason to use it several years later when the 360 came around.
