So I had a hitatchi 47 or something like that, flashed it, and it would read games very poorly, mostly getting oopen tray error. So I followed leerages adviced and attempted to calibrate the POT, that went horribly so I had to order a new drive, so I went with a VAD6038 and loe and behold it works astoundingly. It reads EVERYTHING, even those memorex's that didn't work on my hitachi. In conclusion BenQ ftw!

Wouldnt use the Memorex, even on the Benq. The dye is rubbish on them and it will end up wrecking your laser.
I use memorex with no problems. BenQ's are the best and I personally think they are the most quite drive. The Hitachi drives suck and are picky on media. Supposedly the laser will weaken. In my case, you can get a BenQ for $33 shipped to your door, so spending the money on verbs for me doesn't make sense. Of course I have a good burner too. Just all depends on the person.
