I have an xbox 360 hooked up to a regular comptuer display via hdmi. the thing is the monitor doesn't have speakers so i can play games but can't hear sound.

Is there some kind of adapter or splitter i can buy to get the sounds to go to some external spekears or headphones?

You could get the VGA adapter for the 360, which has component cords for stereo sound.

Or you could modify your 360's grey component cable so that you can use it and the HDMI at the same time (basically just take off plastic shell) and then it will output optical audio through that while it outputs video via HDMI. You could route that optical to a receiver if you have one.
