The drive (a samsung) originally had 1.4 firmware. It now has 1.6 firmware. I noticed that the drive is a lot louder and spins faster than it did prior to 1.6. Was this supposed to happen? It could be my imagination, but if the drive is in fact spinning faster I'd like to slow it down as I don't want to have overheating problems. Can it be done?

Quote: -Strict drive speed compliance - 12x only for game discs!
why is that? is it possible to slow the drive down? like 1.6 8x or something like that?

1.6 Forces the 12x speed that all retail drives are running at. All previous Ixtreme firmwares were at 8x. The louder sound is normal.

Install your games to the hard drive. Then it will as quiet as a mouse.

My hard drive holds no more than one disc. I don't want to be copying and deleting discs all the time.
Are retail drives supposed to run at 12x?
If that's the case then I suppose I have nothing to worry about since it's running at the speed it was designed to run at. On the other hand, if it is possible to run the drive at 8x, perhaps using 1.51 firmware, I'm going for it as I'd rather prolong the life of my drive.

All firmware since ix1.5 has been 12x ONLY. There is no changing it.

I understand that's the way it is, but isn't it going to damage my drive? At 12x it sounds like my 360 is going to burst any moment.

Before you modded your drive, it was originally at 12x. It will be fine.

How much space does a game take on a hard drive anyway?

Well you have to "damage" something, otherwise your XBOX 360 is just going to be sitting there.
