Subtitle font size problem after re-muxing MKV

I used MKVextractGUI to split a MKV so I could edit the subtitles, which are in ASS format. I merged it back together with MKVmergeGUI and the size of the subtitles' font has mysteriously increased, more than double, perhaps. It's not as if I edited the font specifications in the ASS: just the subtitles themselves.
