The results of this survey paint female characters in a very unflattering light.

I confused, how can they even base this accurately? If using the online service for each console, not everyone plays their consoles online. If they base it on sales, not everyone bothers to play the game they buy. If they actually call up people and asks, they can never call enough....
This statistic is just pointless.

Nielsen is largely survey based, which is how it gets data on systems that don't go online.

I seriously doubt these statistics look at online play. Because there's no way people game that much online with a Playstation 2. Rarely do people go online with a PS2. I know many people who haven't went online with it at all.
If we are talking game usage in general, it's still odd that the PS2 is leading. Normally in our society, if something is old we usually let it collect dust or sell it.

The 360, although cheaper than the PS3 still costs quite alot to some people and the PS2's library is still growing and most of these guys are actually waiting for a price drop for the PS3 so the PS2 is their resort instead of the Xbox.
And the Wii is just old and doesn't appeal much to gamers on the PS2.

I'm not a girl and I own a Wii and I do play it at times.
I have a PS3 too, does that make me a male with female genitals?
Stereotypes these days.

It's true that there are a lot of PS2 gamers who don't like the Wii and feel the Next Gen is too expensive ($300-400 is too high of a price point compared to previous gens. $200 is normally the sweet spot and the 360 hard drive is practically a must so the $200 Arcade isn't enough) But the PS2 recaptured the usage lead from the Xbox 360. That's what makes these stats odd. If the PS2 was leading up until now, your theory would be correct. Telling from stats, my guess is 360 owners are playing less than they usually do because there haven't been many big releases this summer for HD consoles.

if that's so then why don't I have one??
My pal The_Fiend broke his ankle playing tennis on the wii.. within a week of it being released.
Sorry Dan.. kaka happens and it's a couple of years down the line eh?
I'm not surprised the ps2 continues to sell.. the sheer number of games and the low cost and proven resale value is a good selling point.. My only gripe is about the quality of the lasers in the slimlines.. total crap IMHO. A year in and we are seeing the same poor quality in the optical drives on the ps3 .. apart from the other unfixable failures. I'm not ragging on fony.. the ps2 like the ps1 has been a great success.. I just wonder if anybody would have bought a 360 if M$ hadn't discontinued the xbox so quickly.

the only thing xbox had going for it was the Nvidia chipset and the bus system. 733mhz coppermine wasn't no where near the prowess of the emotion chip

the xbox had the Nvidia Chipset. while the PS2 chose to use there own Graphics solution called Graphics Synthesizer. Sony Later incorporated both the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer on one chip found in the Slims.
the Emotion Engine backed by Sony's lust for raw number crunching prowless. left the coppermine with a big why in the world is this old thing in there. in 2001 2002 there were better Choices for a CPU.
as per your question the GS chip employed by Sony was a horrible choice they could have done way better, my guess is they didn't want to break backwards capability by using a more power full GPU. after all the only PS1 legacy part was the MiPS R3000A this left the PS2's GS to draw graphics.
