I'm having big issues at the moment with my controllers dropping out all the time and MS wanna charge me an ungodly amount just to look at it. My issue at the moment is definatly one of the reciver inside the xbox itself, something is small as someone walking infront of the control will make it drop out instantly, so I've been looking for ways to solve this. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue before?

I found an article where someone increased thier range by doing this:-

Quote:
Based on information on a AnandTech article, I found out where the internal antenna was in the console and how to get to it. It's a flat square antenna left of the power button behind the face plate. The AnandTech article told me how to get to it.

1. I striped about 1/4" off a flat speaker cable I had and attached it to the internal antenna using simply scotch tap to hold it in place when closing the console (when you put the faceplate back on the pressure holds the wire in place). The face plate snapped in place just fine, but you really need "flat" speaker cable to make sure there is no binding.

2. I attached the other end of the cable to my coax cable that runs from the closet to the media room.

3. I attached a small antenna to the coax cable in the media room using an antenna I got with my Direct TV receiver. But I think any small antenna will work.

It made a huge difference, and now the controller works 100%, in fact having the antenna where it is, seemed to allow the controller to be used anywhere in our house. I think it would be nice if Microsoft someday adds a connector for an external antenna someday, but my hack seems to work and should work for others as well.
This is something I will be trying, but since he was trying to extend, while I'm just trying to fix I thought someone might know something else to try?

It's pretty hard researching this type of thing... all you ever find is people trying to connect to xbox live over a bridge :(

Many thanks for any help anyone has to offer.

Unless your good at soldering, wouldnt recommend changing the LEDS

There quite easy to install

1) Take you xbox faceplate off

2) Unscrew the 3 screws on the rf module (Torq 5 I think)

3) Slide off the RF Module

4) Slide on new RF Module

5) Screw back in 3 screws

6) Re-attach faceplate

Thanks for the advice, I'm just looking at things that ship to my location. I'll go with what you said and get something new, which only really leaves me with ones people had modded. That's okay, I can rice up my xbox I guess... better than it not working.

For anyone elses reference, here's a video on how to install, it's as easy Miketrev says

Actually one last question for anyone that might know. Are these region specific or is it a global thing? I'm in Australia and the only places that ship here are from the US by the looks of it. I assume I'd be fine, but though I'd double check.

Thanks again for all your help Miketrev, going to save me a lot of hassles!

They're not region locked, the xbox is pretty much the same in every country accept for the region codes for games.

I've got the tools to do it, but it might be a good idea to point out anyone that wants to do this will have to take the xbox apart (voiding warrenty). Here's a video on opening it without a tool

I prefer using the tool, but I'm lazy!
