Alright, I have a BenQ Drive (as said in the title) and I'm having a couple of problems..

1. I realize that I will probably need a Via 6421 Chipset in order to flash my Xbox correctly. My problem is I don't have one, and I have the ability to buy one, but even though I have researched this topic extensively, I have never really done anything with messing with my computer and would never know how to install that chipset. So, I turn to the experienced people who could help me. This is my number one problem.

2. Also, I need to know if I have to have a seperate SATA cable or if my computer has one installed or something or if I could use the Xbox' cable..

3. I'm having quite a bit of problems with the firmware and programs and such...iPrep is not loading my iXtreme Benq v1.6 firmware and Jungle Flasher seems too much for me (which could be fixed with imput from you guys.) Also, I went into my system BIOS and went to boot menu (F12) and nothing there said usb drive. It said Hard Drive
CD-ROM and Utility Manager or something. I'll check again on that. Btw, I have a Vista. Also I just opened up my 360 to the point of the TORX screws, as I plan on buying a TORX-10 screwdriver later today.

I have almost evrything ready, except for the SATA card and actual firmware, and firmware-associated programs.

An extra note, I determined I have a BenQ because I looked at the shape of my DVD Slot, not by looking at the wires inside of a hole mentioned elsewhere. Is this important?

And also, I heard recently from only one source, that I'm going to need a probe. Nowhere else have I heard this, nor do I have any idea what a probe would be for or why I would use it.

I'm sorry for the noobish questions, I got this Xbox from Christmas, and my whole family uses it, I don't want to ruin it, but I still want to be able to make backup copies of games so I don't have to go resurface them, as my brother has no respect for my expensive games.

Sigh..he blames me for ruining his Rock Band 2 (which I hate) for Ps2 lol..

ONE MORE NOTE: I have heard I should physically disconnect all of my other hardware in my computer before attempting to flash otherwise, I might end up flashing those instead of my Xbox. Is this true? If so, How would I do so without blowing up my computer? And, how would I be able to back up the original firmware, in case I screw up?

And what's a brick?

Thank you for all of your help in this extremely confusing topic!

EDIT: I have confirmed I have a Lite-ON DVD Drive, and have changed the title accordingly, so do not be confused by my post!

If you onboard SATA is not compatible, you will need to purchase the VIA 6421 card.

I would get an additional SATA cable.

I would definitely use Jungle Flasher as it is GUI and I have an easy easy walkthrough linked in my signature.

You will need to look at the wires because the BenQ and the Lite-ON have the same type of tray. 1 firmware revision of the Lite-ON requires additional hardware so you will definitely want to check that out.

Only if you have the 74850C Lite-ON.

Use Jungle Flasher as it won't allow you to dump firmware from say your hard drive or DVD drive of your computer.

It is used to make buildings.... I'm kidding! A "brick" is referred to as drive that made useless or non-working. Example: I erased the firmware off my drive and now it is a brick. As long as you have the original firmware/dvkey you will be fine.

Ok leerage thanks that cleared up like 6 things but still more :)

Ok how do I check that my SATA is compatible? And if it isn't, how would I install a new one?

Also when I go to my BIOS, I don't see any option to boot from USB.

And where exactly do I check to see if I have a Lite-ON or not? (Damn glad I asked!)

Scratch that, I have a Lite-ON (damn), so what extra do I need? And also can you provide links for everything I need to used with JF please, I have so much different stuff for everything I have no idea which I will need, even if you told me lol. And also where I could download Jungle Flasher. I also need to know if I need DosFlash or whatever and iPrep (I don't think so, aren't they alternate ways to flash?)

I really don't want to mess up, I'm sorry lol.

Yeah, the most thing im worried about is the S-ATA card, and how I would install it if my original one was not compatible (still don't know how to check that)

Thanks for the help, I greatly appreciate it.

You will just have to try it out. If you can read the firmware, more than likely you can write the firmware. There is a program called CPU-Z. Download and run it and look at the mainboard tab. Then look at the southbridge chipset.
ICHx (Intel) usually aren't compatible. nForce chipsets are usually compatible.

Take the 360 face plate off and right under where it says "XBOX 360" on the DVD bezel is a small hole. Shine a flash light in there and look at what color of wires you have.
BenQ = White
Lite-ON = Yellow

If you have a Lite-ON, you will need to open up to see what firmware revision you have. Since you said you got it around Christmas time. I am guessing you have a 74850C Lite-ON.

Thanks dude, for some reason I lol'd when you said "Then your'e defnitely going to want to use Jungle Flasher."

Yeah, I have a previous post with some other stuff if you missed it I'll just copy it here:

One more thing, I have opened my 360 to the point of unscrewing the TORX screws. I do not currently own one, so I was wondering if I could go to like Do It Best or something like Lowe's and grab one there cheap. Also, do you think Radio Shack would have an additional SATA cable or even the chipset? (maybe Best Buy) Thanks alot!

Oh yes, and what would I need a "probe" for, and where could I get one?

Any hardware store should have the Torx10. You will probably have to order the VIA 6421 card if your onboard SATA doesn't work. If you have the 74850C Lite-ON, you will need the probe. You can find the Probe + Connectivity kit at www.modchip.ca or www.modchipcentral.com. You can also build your own probe. bhetrick has a guide stickied in the ultimate sticky.

If you really feel the price and technically difficulty would get to you, send me a PM. I can dump and flash the Lite-ON for you.

Well, the thing is, I don't want to buy a connectivity kit, I know they are not required..is there any risk or anything using the xbox' own power? And, I can't tell you what type of Lite-ON I have until I buy the TORX so I guess that's my next step. Also would Radio Shack have an additional SATA cable?

Is building my own probe hard?

And about you flashing it for me, you charge a fee I assume? Would I just send it to you or something?

And I need to know how I would install the SATA if my onboard doesn't work..(I pray to God it does)

Yeah, that should be summing things up pretty nicely. Thanks alot! I Actually have so much more questions, I wish I could meet you in real life. Not that I am preparing to make any movement towards doing so, lol.

But, If I have to send it to you, my parents would be like wtf and it would probably never happen. They asked me why I took apart such an expensive piece of crap, and I said the power button wasn't pushing (which is true, but not reason I took apart :P). I could lie and say I couldn't fix it but I'm sending it to someone who can lmao.

If you only want to use the XBOX 360 to power the drive, you will have to build your own probe. It will require a DB-9 Serial connection on the back of your computer. If you don't have one of those, you can get a DB-9 to USB adapter. I'm positive you will have the 74850C from the date that you said you got the 360 around.

Alright, luckily my family is going to go to BK for lunch, and theres a DoIt Best like 2 feet away. So I told my dad to fix the power button I need a TORX 10 (lmao) and he said ok I'll buy you one, but only because you squander your money on those darn cubes (rubiks cubes). So that's gonna be taken care of. I'm getting ready to google what a DB-9 looks like and one second..
umm im pretty sure I have one but its being used. Is that normal?

and what else do i need to build a probe and what is it for

THANKS SO MUCH
really your saving my mind from self-destruction..hopefully im not taking up too much of your time, and I have looked around alot I thought I had a BenQ..lol

The probe is what will go into the R707 hole on your XBOX 360 Lite-ON PCB board. It will pull the DVDkey along with drive specific info. That information will then be spoofed to IX 1.6 and you will flash it back to the drive. Take a look at the Jungle Flasher tutorial or the walkthrough linked in my signature for the process. Torx 8 is only if you have to take the motherboard out of the 360 and you don't need to do that when flashing a drive.

Look inside your computer to see if there is any SATA ports in there. If not, you will need to get a VIA 6421 card like this:

this is a little old thread, but i have a few more questions. (almost done)..since i suck at soldering i think i will buy a connectivity kit.. would this work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Connectivity-kit-V3-...id=p3286.c0.m14

and what does a sata port look like? would the sata card just plug in? thanks alot im almost done with all the hardware stuff

i plan on buying a usb to db9 thing TORX10 and an additional sata cable at radioshack the screwdrive being at a hardware store.

I plan on ordering the connectivity kit online and if my card doesnt work then also ordering the VIA6421 chipset.
Umm, after I get all of that ready to go, I only need like JF and all the connections and stuff up right? I don think I own any alligator clips (strangely) so I'm going to just let their metal cases touch.

also, with JF do I have to physically unplug any drives or anything? I read somewhere it could end up flashing that instead.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP! I am so much closer to flashing my xbox this is basically my very first electronics project so you would see why I am having so many questions. 1 I_00X ph02\I/42[) 70 `/0M2 235?0I\I53

Don't buy that kit. Since you have a BenQ drive you don't need a probe like a Lite-On does. You get a BenQ drive's key from the SATA port. Also, you don't need any type of thing that uses DB9. You will use SATA for everything.

The SATA card you will get is a PCI card, like an extra network card or sound card might be. You will just have to take the side off of your computer, remove the little screw holding the metal back cover segment on, and push the card into the matching hole. You can't miss it. Then just put the screw into the card. It will come with directions as well if you need more instruction, or there are plenty of Youtube videos about it, I'm sure.

You don't have to unplug any drives with JF unless you can't tell which drive is which by looking at their model number and drive letter. If you can't tell the difference, unplug your other DVD drive.

Of course my particular PC doesn't like when I unplug the SATA BluRay drive, and refuses to boot when I do so. YMMV.

Sorry, my bad.

If so, then yes, buy the connectivity kit. The one you linked to is just fine.

would i still need a db9 thing for a probe? or are their probes like usb or something cause the usb-to-db9 is like 30$. I don't see an empty one in the back of my computer, but i think its being used by my monitor. and its using two of them..so I pretty much have to buy a usb to db9 thing right? and if i bought a sata cable, could both of the connectors be 7-pin females? TY
