I was fixing a friend's 360 and he gave it to me as it was, which was a 360 that turned on with no video but audio. I decided to open it up and do the x-clamp fix on it. well I replaced the x clamp with screws and re applied some of the old thermal paste that melted off the gpu and then I put on the heat sink. It gives me the red ring, so I go to loosen it, still...nothing but red right, then I turned the motherboard sideways with the power on and tried tightening it some more. After that I got a weird response. I powered on the 360 it immediately went to red ring without a green flash and the power supply turned from orange to red. So I tried another power supply...same response. It would seem I might have shorted this 360. Is there any hope of me fixing it. It seems like an easy fix considering the 360 is still booting up before I opened it.

How come you only relace some of the thermal paste? Clean all of the old thermal paste off both the Heatsink and the chip and then re-apply artic silver.

And you don't need fucking arctic silver to put on a 360 any thermal paste will work.
Let's see, it's an overheat problem but you aren't willing to listen to good advice to use thermal grease in the proper way, and even cuss at the guy. Brilliant.
Look, I'm sorry but it's a little frustrating when things like this stop working. I apologize for cursing I'm not a bad guy I just want my 360 fixed. But the fact of the matter is that it's very peculiar that the 360 stopped heating up when I turned it on and it acts like it's shorted. So I'm not even sure it's a thermal paste issue but I'll try it and come back with results.
there's some really nice people on this forum thay ask for help then start to diss the people who try to help? can some body tell my why? or is strifeman just a t*t?
I'm not saying that it will necessarily fix the problem, I was just commenting that you were being rude to somebody who was going out of their way to help you. I'm sure it's frustrating and all, but guess what? Nobody here is getting paid to help you, so if you want help, a good attitude pays dividends.
