According to video game market analyst Michael Pachter, PlayStation 3 stock is dwindling in the UK and Japan, implying a new model (Slim PS3) is in the works as well as possible price cuts.
Speaking to VG247, Pachter noted that retail channels in both regions are "drying up" with orders being held until the end of the month.

Yes it could, the chips have gotten much smaller, and now generate less heat. This means smaller circuit boards and coolers. BluRay drives have also evolved a bit since the PS3 came out (BluRay burners now available in better laptops...when the PS3 came out, Blu-Ray READERS were all but unknown even in desktop systems).
Hopefully the Slim doesn't get a great feature that will never happen on the current PS3 because at least 20 million people will lose out on this 'new' feature.
The PSP Slim just took over the PSP just because the RAM was doubled.
