Long time reader, first time poster. Most recently I found quite a bit of success using the forums to gather enough information to feel confident enough to flash a friends DVD drive. Everything went fine and I wanted to say thanks for the help.

Now, I have a new problem. My own Xbox 360 has given me the E74 error after numerous bouts with RROD. It was repaired twice since 2006 by Microsoft until I got the RROD again about 5 months ago. That's when I removed the x clamps myself and got it working again. This recent E74 error kinda caught me off guard and after not being able to get it running I am thinking about the reflow process, but I would like to know what I would be paying someone to do to my system.

What I've been able to gather is that there is a distinct difference between reflowing a system and reballing it. So, if I do send my console off to one of these guys, what should I expect?

Would it be a good idea to invest in one of the newer style heatsinks that llama is selling? How about the XCM Core Cooler, does it really do its job?

Thanks for any help..

Memphis

Well the E74 is not like an overheating issue, it means there is something wrong with either the A/V Cable you are using, or it could be the chip for the A/V. So what I would try doing, is first try a different 360 cable, that you could maybe borrow from a friend or buy one, and see if it will run off that.

If it doesn't, then there is something wrong with the actual chip inside the system, and your best bet would be to just send it to M$. Sometimes you can get lucky and they will fix it, even if it was already opened.

It's not the cable.
I have my friends flashed xbox here with me and that was my first attempt at trouble shooting. The cable works fine. I just want to know how firm of a solution re flowing a board really is.

Well its not gonna 100% fix your issue if the actual chip is fried. It will only help if the pins are not making correct contact with the motherboard.

I was curious about this too.

Reflowing is not illegal is it? And I don't believe this is advertising so mods shouldn't see a problem.

What would be the average cost for a reflow service? Just wondering as was curious about the amount of time and effort that goes in, to the actual cost?

Don't PM me. I don't need my Xbox reflowing

From seeing a few posts, looks like around $40 USD. Defo not illegal though as your not modifying your console to circumvent copy protected. Its just a repair.

Cool good to know.
Hopefully I can have this done, add the new GPU hotsink, and a few fans and be good to go.

Thanks for the info guys.
