Just got a broken box off ebay + vague seller = trashed xbox

I started off by taking off the faceplate to see if there was a warranty sticker, of course it was completely removed with leftover scraps still sticking to it.
I thought "oh of course.." and turn it around to see if the case is passable. You know where you press in on those clips to take it off? Yeah there is nothing but holes there. Not to mention that the two grey siding things are missing and the box wasnt even snapped back together correctly to begin with.
I asked the seller what the problem was and of course they played dumb "oh it was my husbands so Idk whats wrong with it" (after I paid) "oh now that you mention it my son took it apart and did something to fix it"
Anywho that's that. Now on to the real problem:
There is no red blinking lights (hurray) the only problem is that the middle green light flashes and the DVD drive wont eject. I am guessing this means I need a new DVD drive correct? Or is there anything else I can do to see what the problem might be?

feel lucky if your dvd keys match the motherboard...i got so many from ebay where the keys didnt match making them just fancy dvd players
it sounds like the dvd isnt even hooked up....otherwise yeah i would say ya might need a new 1

Thanks I am still in the process of taking the casing off.
I was wondering why it was so easy to take the grey thing off the side, apparently the kid just ripped it straight out and then ripped the case off as well.
How do you check and see if the DVD key matches? Am I just SOL if they dont?
Oh god the front white XBOX 360 DVD cover just fell off. It looks as if its not even a real 360 drive.

It is missing every single one of the screws on the inside as well.

Already fixed it.
The DVD drive was put in the wrong way (the dvd cover was taped on) and it was completely unplugged. Just switched it around and it booted right up.
There was some tape on the underside of it so I am assuming they did the x-clamp fix. How exactly do you tell if it has been done? I have never done it before.

try to play a retail game....if it says to "play this game put in a xbox 360..."it most likley has the wrong drive.i wouldnt think you would get such a prob if you purchased from an individual.cause most of my probs came from game sellers that sold like 3 or 5 at a time
look on the bottom of the game ....if u see 8 little black hex screws than most likley it hasnt had the x clamp fix....a sure way to tell it does is those 8 screws are missing and you can see silver screws through the holes

There was some clicking noises but I think that is just from a piece of tape hitting the fan.... yep that was it.
Oh cool it's a hitachi drive. I don't need the probe at least but I think I will keep this one around in case my default box gets banned.

Oh wow. I also just noticed that this xbox has clearly gone up in smoke before. There is smoked imprints on the inside of the casing.

Oh. Well there is a hell of a lot of brown dust in here.
I think I may end up just getting a cool custom case for it since this one is so beat up and re-sell it.

Yeah this is the one.
I was prepared for the worst but it turned out this wasn't so bad.
Although I believe this box has had the xclamp fix done to it, I don't know how to tell. So that means it probably isn't going to work for too long.
It smells like febreeze believe it or not. FRESHNESS!
But it most likely is smoking residue.

Hopefully it continues to work good. Maybe check the board to see if you see any thermal paste residue or any scratches into the motherboard. What type of motherboard is it and what drive does it have?

Well like an idiot I just gave it the new update. Whatever I don't really care about homebrew anyways..
So it is going through that right now. I'll update this post when it's done.

More bad news: I signed on to xbox live with it and joined a party. Talked for about 3 minutes. Then it completely froze. Now it is showing 3 red rings :(

I figured it would happen eventually.
Is there anything else I could try to fix it? Would a reflow help?
I tried registering the console but of course the serial number is already in use. I might just try buying an OEM case and using the serial number off of that or seeing if I can't borrow a friends or something.. idk

Open up the dash and go to information and make sure the serial is the same. You might try calling Micrsoft and someone will put it in your name.
