I know this is a common problem with hitatchi drives that they will read original dvd's and dvd movies with no problems but will not read burned discs. I am havign this issue with a hitachi v47 drive at the moment, I have a known working backup disc (worked in two different drives, verbatim dvd+r @ 2.4) but it won't play in this hitachi (flashed to 1.51).

herss what i have done:
1) cleaned lens with alcohol
2) lubricated the rods
3) adjusted laser POT, tested at every 100 ohm interval right down to 2.80 stock was at 3.49
4) tried the rubber band fix
5) tried the foam buffer trick (pretty much same as rubber band)
6) tried the loosing/tightening laser torx screws (tested about 20 times at different tightness)

all the laser does is sit there bumping back in forth about 1cm right at the beginning of the disc.

is it time to give up or is there anything else I could try?

I think you have pretty much named every trick there is to fixing the Open Tray issue, except replacing the laser. I would go with a replacement BenQ.

make sure the ribbons foil is not pulled back at all casuing a bad connection anywhere. I had the exact problem and thats all it was.

Ok is that the ribbon that connects to the laser? I did pull all the ribbons off to do the inital POTS and oput them all back in so that should have fixed any contact issues anyway.

I think I will just try and get a replacement drive from another broken xbox then.
