For the second time this month, a leaked catalog picture shows that Microsoft is set to drop the price of the Xbox 360 Elite to $299 USD.
The first leak, from Meijer, was uploaded to Kotaku two weeks ago. The latest, through Engadget, shows a Wal-Mart flyer showing off the same price cut.
Expected cut date, August 30th.

That's nice to see. Now can we please get a price drop on the 120GB HDD from $120 to $80-90?

Personally I'd love to see the price cut done to the HDD rather than the console at this point; the console doesn't need one yet and MS seems rather stanced on them not doing a price-cut. Just because Wal-Mart does a roll back doesn't mean the system is permanently going to be that price, I've seen roll-backs go up in price.
Until again, MS confirms it, I takes these tidbits as the grain of salt they are worth.

Why would anyone thing this is a good deal? For the same price you can get the PS3 Slim a much better system with an equally good yet free network, can have any laptop 500gb HDD installed for half the price of the 360 HDD, real 1080p resolution, and Blu-Ray.
$299 for a DVD9 game console that maxes at 720p resolution is a joke now that Sony has stepped up to the plate. The market is saturated with 360 owners, they should now keep us happy and not give us a reason to get a PS3. At this point if M$ wants to win the sales game they need to help us 360 owners that already have the console happy. lower XBL to $30, cut the costs on peripherals (i.e. the HDD, the Wi-Fi antenna, etc.) That would go a long way. Because in the grand scheme of things with both systems at the same price, most people with half a brain would get the much better PS3.
If they want to stay on top they need to change their game and support their only real advantage over Sony. Their strength in numbers. And keep the millions they have now happy.

Omfg, if you don't know anything about the topic at hand than don't post! Elite has a 120gb hard drive, if you knew anything about the xbox you would know that. Seriously, ps3 owners stick to their news and xbox 360 owners will stick to theirs (I can go to both since I have all systems). Comments like SDF's starts flame wars.

If people wanted a dumbed down version ps3, that looks like square laptop with matte black colour that was a last ditch effor to salvage sony's future than we would buy a ps3 slim. But instead people choose to buy the xbox 360... go figure.

If I want to watch a movie, that's what my PC is for. It's not like it costs very much to get one connected to your HDTV and have it run at 1080p, slap on a BluRay and done. I prefer my consoles to be what the soul purpose of them should have stayed at, gaming..
Honestly I feel that the gaming industry has been soiled ever since marketing strategy has focused to the masses. That's even going back to the first console to incorporate DVD movie, or using a cell phone as a console. How much $ could have been saved if the companies in the hardware business simply focused on gaming, rather than a multi-function all in one entertainment system. PC's were built for that function, why do I need a PC and a game console to do everything that a PC does, or a hand held that does everything a cell phone and a portable PC / hand-held device does? We don't need every console to mimic one another either, to give me my choice of how I wanna watch something; like it was so much fucking easier when VHS and DVD's were just the standard, and everyone had to bite it.
Now, they will never go back; it will always be about entertaining the masses, because now buying a game console is not about buying it for games; because now you can play with avatars, chat instantly, link to your favorite social sites, and now add gimmicky peripherals and YAY US! As a hard core gamer, I can't help but feel let down, and people wonder why games are $50-100 a title on release, well now you know. Peace out.

They only start "flame wars" because people like you decide to respond to them. If you don't agree with it, so be it. You're speaking on the most open network: the internet.
And I'll post wherever the f**k I feel like :)

I can't tell from the picture, and it's not listed-- I don't see that this version comes with and HDMI cable. So if not you can add another $50 to that price. Does anyone know if it comes with it or not?

Well I can get a HDMI cable for only $12 each locally and I'm sure everyone else can too somewhere but most people are stupid and think the more expensive the cable the better, even though they're both the same. That's where Best Buy comes in :/

That's where Best Buy comes in :/ Good to know! Guess I'm stupid...It's just that every HD product I own came with the HDMI cable so I've never shopped around for low prices. I just always see them in stores for about 50 bucks. Also not sure (I'll check) but it's been my experience that you get what you pay for, and I'm sure not all cables are the same quality regardless of the price. I'm sure you CAN get equal quality cables for less, but are you saying EVERY HDMI cable is the same? I kinda doubt that. Then again I'm probably in the "most people...stupid" category.

Another typical fanboy pretending to be unbiased.
EDIT: Oops. I posted on the 360 news when I don't have one.
Now I'm getting executed for disobeying your godly rule that a PS3 owner can't comment on 360 news and vice versa.

This is just the initial quick counter-move to the slim PS3.
Afterall what is an Elite?
A black painted Arcade with a HDD.
I fully expect that now Sony have shot their bolt (and by all accounts still lose money on the PS3 slim - they cost about $252 with transport, packaging and all the rest on top) that this interim move will be followed by another a little closer to Xmas which will cut the differential further.
I also expect Nintendo to also move for the same reasons.
Why would the PS3 attract parents buying their kids a game console?
They certainly won't care about Blu-ray.
Most of the a/v guys I know wouldn't have a game console as their movie player anyways.

The big news for me will be to see a new and genuinely big HDD.
I find 120gb is just too small.
I'd hope that we see the 120gb HDD fall in price to a more normal level and a 500gb or larger HDD take over as the really big one.

I too would love a bigger Hard Drive, but since buying the elite and filling up most of my HDD my xbox can take up to 5 mins to find what's on it. I have to wait several minutes to even select a video I've downloaded, but I also think it could just be the NXE that has made the system performance crap. Or a combo of both.

Wow sideffx, that sounds bad.
I'm glad mine (NXE & latest update) doesn't do that; that really isn't my experience at all.
Have you tried defragging/clearing the cache?
h**p://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=449141
I was once also recommended that it's a good idea to leave the last 10% of (any) HDD's capacity unused.
Good luck.

Yeah, I clear the cache all the time, it makes the system work fine until I turn it off. Then next time I play it is just as slow again, and now I have to re-download every patch and update when I play. It sucks, I NEVER had this problem with a smaller hard drive and the old dash. I've read a lot of posts on xbox.com and other sites with people having the exact same problem. I love my xbox 360 but sometimes I won't even bother playing 'cause of this. Also when I save a game to the HDD, I'm only given the option to "play from Hard Drive" about %30 of the time. MS won't offer any help and deny ever hearing of these problems. Sorry if this post is off topic, but this is about my Elite System and just want to warn anyone who is thinking of upgrading like I did.

You could just answer to my question..... and who made you cop in here?
ps3 owners do not post to a 360 topic and vise versa???
What is wrong with you? grow up for god's sake.

Rubbish post that proves very little points aside from i agree with the lowering of peripheral prices. Much better??? Too each his own. That is in the eye of the beholder. The resolution issue hasnot changed anything in the games graphics so far so what validity does that point bring about. NONE. Its simply about what exclusive do you enjoy most. Ones for PS3 or Xbox360. Or just be like me and eventually buy them both consoles to enjoy all games.
The price is good to match the slim PS3 but what will Microsoft do for an encore?

I'm so glad we had this discussion. After my first comment in this thread, I read a few articles and all suggested NEVER paying more than $10 for an HDMI cable. That the high priced (monster) with promises of better quality everything is a joke. Now I know. I love this website!!!!
