One of my friends just filled up his 500GB, and needs more space. He wants to get one of those ESATA port adapter things and a hardware port multiplier with 5 1.5TB drives in RAID5...total space usable space would be 6TB (plus redundancy!).

But would it work with the PS3 OS? I have heard that it is a FAT32-based filesystem, but modified (files over 4GB are OK). I know the maximum size of a FAT32 drive is just 2TB (and that files are oversized, reducing performance badly). Does the PS3 filesystem also suffer from this limitation?

I don't recall anyone ever running into a limit yet but what your pal is doing is pretty out there; it wouldnt surprise me either way is he did or didnt hit a limit really.

FWIW I don't recall there ever being any evidence that the PS's file system was based off of fat32; it was however a common misconception that because external drives needed to be fat32 so people assumed the internal was the same, thats likely where that idea arose from. I could be mistaken however.

Yeah, it's just what I was able to piece together from googling...the general idea I got was that it uses a modified fat32 file system, with special markers every 300MB (this is probably why files over 4GB can be used), and with a proprietary encryption method that resembles Apple's encryption in many ways.

...But that's all just rumor it seems, no solid proof.

If the limit is just 2TB, he will probably just get a 2TB WD...if it is more, he will go with the 5-port multiplier and 5 1.5TB drives...but he does not want to do anything untill he knows for sure.

I posted the same question in a few other places...if I get any answers, I'll post them here.

I'd be interested in hearing what you find out. I thought it was a hard fact that Sony dev'd their own proprietory file system that only reads FAT32. I've heard that it reads ext2, but I never actually tried that.

That's some big plan your buddy has. 500GB used up? Does he use it for movies and music and YDL?

He has YDL, but that gets only 10GB of the space. Other than a dozen games and about 5,000MP3s, he filled the PS3 partition with DVDShrink Shrunken DVDs & home movies...but he only has about 1/10 of his movies on there right now (2TB would not be enough for all of them, but it would be enough for the more frequently watched ones). While he does have YDL, he prefers to stay in the PS3-OS...and I don't think YDL has been started since I installed it.
