So I have a basic 20GB hdd that came with my 360. I have never played online with it, or taken my hdd out.

NOW my hdd says its not formatted!? I have no idea whats happened or how to fix it. I have bought 2 memory units, a 256 and a 512, but I cant see my save game files to back them up.

IS THERE A WAY TO FIX THIS ISSUE OR DO I HAVE TO REFORMAT THE DRIVE AND SO ON...???

Any help with the issue, will be awsome!

Thanks.

Hi All:

If it's been formatted the only way to recover the data is by removing the drive from it's case and checking the partition for recoverable bytes.

I'm not sure if there is an application available that supports the 360 partition type and recovery of data.

If it's anything like the original Xbox hard drive partition it uses "fatx" and there are several *nix distributions that can access it, not sure about recovery of data though.

If it's like the PS3 it uses RAW data and no "real" partition scheme (i.e. NO chance of recovery).

For the most part you are SOL, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Apparently, from what MS said on their site, the system uses a FAT32 partition - which as far as I know (Ive built plenty of PC's in my day) means I can use a data recovery apps and recover my data easily enough... then drop it into a thumb drive and copy that to my system after formatting the hard drive... if that is actually do-able.

lol, nice...

I haven't heard of this before, so it must not be that widespread. Unfortunately, I might have to agree that you will just have to reformat.... and you'll lose your saves.

Sorry man

Maybe it's time for you to make your own forum, where you can actually put that into the rules. I'm not making fun of the guy, by any means. jeez.

Now we aren't overly strict re the odd off-topic comment here and there, but the peanut butter 'joke' was bad enough last week when we had one or more threads derailed with it. Let's please get back to xbox 360's mysteriously unformatting themselves...

Well, it could be worth checking out a Datel XSata Data transfer kit. (http://vpgames.com/p-872-datel-xsata-xbox-360-hard-drive-pc-memory-adapter-transfer-saves-from-hard-drive-to-pc.aspx). I really doubt that it will be able to find your old game saves, but at least you can use the thing in the future. You can copy music from your computer to your Xbox hard drive (without having to ripd from each individual CD again), and you can even transfer demos, videos, and anything else if you need to free up some space. Then you can easily just transfer it back when you want it again.

If the drive is fried, and you are definitely buying a new one, get a memory card, and put your drive in a ziplock bag and freeze it. You may be able to recover data off of a frozen drive, but it's not a sure fire method, and you would have to work fast (which is why you don't want to do it until you have the memory card (or transfer kit, for that matter). I've heard of some people having luck with this method, but it's only good for about 2 mins, until the drive warms up.

Thanks for all the help, I did reformat my drive though... took like 5 minutes over all...

Lost all my games. I figure I still own all of them, so why not redo them.

I still play Diablo 1, and am currently waiting on my newly bought Darkstone game - sooo if Im willing to reply OLD ass games like those Im dam sure Im gonna replay some awsome games like Assassins Creed, Gears Of War, etc.

Thanks for all the advice - the freezing of the drive works though, Ive done that for the odd PC drive :D

And for anyone else looking to reformat their hard drive for some reason, check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906502. Not sure why anyone would want to. Save what you want onto a memory card (game saves) and start fresh with your saves, or delete everything to force yourself to play your retro games.

It may not be too bad of an idea to try every now and then, since the Xbox doesn't have any kind of defragmentation tool, an may increase game performance. Not sure if it's any noticable difference, but now it's making me wonder...

Since the drive is formatted via FAT32, it is more prone to fragmentation. FAT32 can't even handle files over 4GB, so when you install a game, it has to put the other part somewhere, thus making there a chance of fragmentation.

The system itself has a reformat tool loaded with it. You need your systems ID tag, which is found in the system tools, takes like 5 mintues tops!

Since my system 'hick-upped' I was loading VERY VERY VERY, did I mention VERY slowly! Now, Im loading fast again.

Sooo Im of the mind to agree with you that it does speed things up. Im gonna do what I do with my PC, load all my personal files to my memory cards, portable hard drives, etc. and use my internal hdd for updates, and such. Just so I can save my files from being 'lost' again. hahaha
