I'll be getting my hands on a old arcade model which has the rrod. I've been told that it's already been owned by 2-3 people, unmodded, and has been registered. I know a few of you buy used machines like this on ebay all the time and send them in to MS. How do you get around this issue if it's still under warranty?
A quick google gives me all kinds of answers like 'get mean with the phone people' or 'say you bought it used on ebay and act dumb' or that they won't even care and switch the info to yours.
Jumping ahead a step, let's say that it is out of warranty, what rrod fix do you recommend? I know there are tons of guides but I'd like to hear from you guys that actually work on 360s a lot.
BTW, I didn't pay for it, just traded a couple odd things for it. The power supply, case, and the dvd drive is well worth what I traded. :D

assuming you can tell it hasnt been opened before, and the warranty sticker is there, you shouldnt have a problem. i usually go with, 'i bought it at a garage sale' or you can just keep calling until some guy ends up switching it over for you. hasnt failed yet.

Ok, sounds good. I do have one more quick question, is there anyway to find out if it is still under warranty without having to call them?

log into xbox.com go to support, then register new console, and put in the SN. if it goes through that way you dont even have to call, you can request a repair from there. but i havent had a problem with them saying it was out of warranty due to manufacturer date, i just sent one in from 05 and they didnt care.

I got my hands on it, besides the case looking dirty, there isn't any signs of force. The silver sticker is fine but it has two black dots which tell me that it's a refurb. The date on the shell is Aug 12, 2006 and it's already registered.
So I guess at this time my only option is to call MS and ask if it's still under warranty and if not, try a fix on my own.
EDIT: You was right, it was easy to get them to switch the name. Problem.....

I would still try to call, just to see if you might get a guy that will allow it. Otherwise you will probably have to do a fix on your own.

actually wait, if its already registered in your name now, just do as i stated before and request the repair online, i did this with my last one because the guy wouldnt let me get free repair since i wasnt the original owner, but yet he registered it in my name. logged onto my xbox.com account and did it from there for free repair.

On that page where you select what the issue is and then it tells you how much it'll cost at the bottom. I've tried all of them and they all say it'll cost $99.
Should I still print out the label and mail it in?

Yup, it sure does. Had I'd actually paid for this machine then I'd be a bit mad. I'm just going to tinker with it a bit and what I learn.

I have always registered it online and haven't had an issue yet. Much easier to register and request a repair. I hate dealing with MS tech support.

when you can register online you are correct. but lately the last 3-5 of mine have already been registered so i cannot do it online, i must call apu and speak hindi to him.

i have a new coffin coming monday, got it off of ebay and it already had the x-clamp fix, but he scratched the hell out of the mobo. hopefully i'll get a free fix and they wont notice the x-clamp.
