Hi everyone!

Hopefully someone can help a n00b out. Few questions:

---------------

1. Gecko OS is also a kind of USB Loader to boot games from USB devices?

2. Ocarina is a cheat application? Can I use it separetly from Gecko OS or is it _only_ implemented in Gecko?

3. SDUSB-Loader and NeoGamma is also Loaders?

4. Is it correct that a dol forwarder is just like a shortcut to run applications from your SD card?

5. I saw that USB Loader GX could be installed as both "channel" and "forwarder". I got HBC and USB Loader 1.5 as icons on the SM. Iīm pretty sure thatīs channel installations and they are working fine. Any mening to install as "forwarder"?

6. If I install an application as channel it goes to the NAND memory? How "big" is the NAND memory? Is it ok to install applications as channel or should I sometimes prefer dol forwarder?

7. Is it harder to remove a program if itīs installed as a channel than a forwader? If itīs on the SD Card itīs just to delete it huh and no harm is done to the Wii itself?

8. Right after I installed HBC I made a NAND-backup. Is it ok (even smart) to do a new (a second) NAND backup when all applications is installed? If I should brick my Wii, could i choose which one of those NAND-backups to reinstall with?

9. After reading some about the USB Loader GX the manual says: "You will need to have any 1 or more of cIOS 249rev9 or greater, cIOS222, or cIOS 223.". I kind of know what i cIOS is but how do I check which ones I already got? I got a tool called "title_lister" with a boot.dol. Anyone heard of that one? If anyone have, could I just put that folder in the apps folder on the SD card and run it from HBC? I think that app will create a list of all cIOS currently installed.

10. I know for sure I got "cIOS36 rev10" installed. Can/should I also install "cIOS36 rev11" (or newer)? Will that replace the old one or will they go hand in hand?

11. Is "cIOS 249rev9" actually also called cIOS38 or something?

12. What is the difference between a WAD installation and a Network installation? I thought I should use WAD installation if I got the WAD-files on the SD-card. Is network installation in case I donīt got any SD-card and can install the WAD wireless from my computer?

13. Could someone explain the difference between "cIOS38 rev 14" (which contains "cIOS38_rev14-Installer.dol") and "IOS38-64-v3610.wad"?

In the readme file for cIOS38rev14 it says:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

"[ REQUISITES ]:

- "IOS38-64-v3610.wad" original WAD file (for WAD installation).
- Network connection (for Network installation).

[ HOW TO INSTALL IT ]:

WAD Installation:

- Copy "IOS38-64-v3610.wad" file to the root of a SD card.
- Insert the SD card on your Wii.
- Run the installer and select "WAD Installation".

Network Installation:

- Run the installer and select "Network Installation"."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

What to they mean by "installer"? Is that the .dol file which I run from HBC? Is the .dol just a loader and the .wad is the actual cIOS? blink.gif

14. Also what is the difference between WAD and Network installation? Could I just copy the .dol file (skip the .WAD file) to the SD card and make a Network installation and download the "IOS38-64-v3610.wad"-file over the net?

thnx in advance!

wow people here are lazy. Most of these questions are answered or have been answered 500 times on this site. You can read up on it in the sticky threads.

First off you have lots of questions so hopefully overtime everyone can answer it for you. For now ill handle the first 2.

1) gecko os is not a loader to boot games from usb devices. Its mainly used to debug code. And i dont even think it uses the usb devices just the gamecube memory card ports.

2) ocarina is a cheat application through text documented codes ending with the gct extension. It can be used via the channel with an ocarina.wad file or you can have it as an application in the homebrew channel. In order to use it you have to have cheat manager though to make the files for your code.

ill give you another
3) sdusb loader loads games from an external usb hard drive and neo gamma loads games from the disk. So yes both are loaders but loads via different methods.

hopefully someone answers the rest im too tired.

It has nothing to do with lazyness, trust me. I have spent hours and hours on different forums, but sometimes you want a "yes" or "no" to a question. Often you understand like 90% of something but not the last 10% and that is not enough.

Yeah I know probably all questions is answered but if I can get all info I need in one thread instead of spending another 20-30 hours searching 200 threads with 50 pages each Iīm really happy.

Hopefully this is a better thread with 14 questions in one instead of 15 different threads with one question each.

But thank you very much for your quick answer!

Anyone who could explain no 13? That would help alot. Thnx and sry for bad english.

ill answer 13 for you as well. Alright though I know how you feel when there is so many questions going around you cant get a direct answer. I was there once but im glad to help now.

the installer.dol file should be placed in your apps folder in the root of your SD card. The wad file for this should be placed in the wad folder in the root of your sd card. You can only install the wad file via the homebrew channel using wad installer. the newest version is wad installer 1.5 which is also placed in the apps folder. Access it via homebrew.

Now if you dont have wad installer and you want to install this installer(meaning the cios38 rev 14 installer) you can access this file via the homebrew channel and run it. It should ask you which method you want to install it from which is network ,sd card etc. If you have internet hooked up to your wii you can choose that route of installation for your wii.

I prefer to update it through the wad channel its much faster. But either route is fine.

Ok thank you very much. So you mean that the .dol and the .wad actually contains the same content? Itīs just 2 different ways to install the content into the Wii?

Also the last thing you wrote I think is my no 14 question. If I donīt have the .wad-file and just running the .dol (installer file) will it connect to some server and download the .wad file from there directly or do I need the .wad-file on my computer shared on the network to be able to get the Wii to find it?

thnx!

2 different methods to install the same content to the wii.
when you connect to the network it will install the content to your wii but not the wad. The wad file should have been included in your download of where you got the installer file. If not you can search it on google. Im sure you can find it.

When you access the installer via homebrew you can choose your method of installation. If you dont have the wad do the network installation. If you do have the wad file place in in your wads folder.

Wads = the fastest way to install. You can update wiis that arent connected online etc. Ive updated 10 wiis with wads never connecting to the internet.

Ok thanks. So if I donīt have the .wad and choose Network it will connect to a server and download the content that the .wad file contains and install it to the Wii?

And if I have the .wad file.. I should use the .dol installer? Can I use a "Wad installer" (Waninkokos) or similar applications to install the content of the .wad file to the Wii also? Or is it more simple to use the .dol installer included?

I have both the .dol and the .wad.

Edit: sry if Iīm slow, just want to be 100% sure before doing anything.

Wait a second here.

Even if you have the WAD file you need to place it at the root of the SD Card and still use the .dol installer to install the cIOS but choose WAD install instead of Network.

IOS38-64-v3610.wad is the official IOS38 from Nintendo. If you use WAD Manager to install it all it is doing is installing IOS38 to the system (not to IOS249 for the cIOS). So use the installer which will get the content it needs from the wad file and use that content to install the cIOS to IOS249.

This is very simple.

cIOS38_rev14 installer has 2 methods to get the content to install the custom IOS to slot 249.

Method 1: WAD which will get the content it needs from the official IOS38-64-v3610.wad file.

Method 2: will get the content from the Nintendo servers via WiFi.

Alright I will try my best to answer some of these questions and hope others use it. But I doubt it.

Quote:
3. SDUSB-Loader and NeoGamma is also Loaders?
Both of these are loaders. They both can perform different task.

SD/USB Loader will load games from a USB device.

NeoGamma R6 (stable version) will load both backup disc and load games from a USB device.

You will need to do a little more research on a particular loader to find out what all it can do.

Quote:
4. Is it correct that a dol forwarder is just like a shortcut to run applications from your SD card?
Yes this is true it is just a shortcut to the SD card. Using a forwarder will avoid having to use the HBC to load the application.

5. I saw that USB Loader GX could be installed as both "channel" and "forwarder". I got HBC and USB Loader 1.5 as icons on the SM. Iīm pretty sure thatīs channel installations and they are working fine. Any mening to install as "forwarder"?
Installing USB Loader GX as a channel will install the loader to the Wii system NAND (no need for SD Card to load the application).

If you install a forwarder you still need the SD Card in the Wii since the forwarder is linked to the loader on the SD card.

There is no reason to have both installed at the same time.

Quote:
6. If I install an application as channel it goes to the NAND memory? How "big" is the NAND memory? Is it ok to install applications as channel or should I sometimes prefer dol forwarder?
You only have a certain amount of blocks to store channels and game saves. If you want to know how much is left then go to Wii Settings data Management and then Channels and look at the blocks that are free.

If your concerned about space on the NAND then a forwarder would probably take up less space then the actual application as a channel would.

You could also move channels installed to the Wii system (using Data Management/Channels) to the SD Card and load them from the SD card icon on the Wii Menu if you have 4.0 firmware and above.

Quote:
7. Is it harder to remove a program if itīs installed as a channel than a forwader? If itīs on the SD Card itīs just to delete it huh and no harm is done to the Wii itself?
Uninstalling a channel or a forwarder would be the same processes. Use WAD Manager and the WAD you used to install it to uninstall it or use the Wii Data Management Channels method to uninstall it.

Quote:
8. Right after I installed HBC I made a NAND-backup. Is it ok (even smart) to do a new (a second) NAND backup when all applications is installed? If I should brick my Wii, could i choose which one of those NAND-backups to reinstall with?
Yes you can make more then 1 backup. Just make sure you label them correctly. I have 3 backups. One was before the softmod. The second was after I performed the 4.1 softmod guide (which is in my sig) and the third was after performing the BOOT DISC FROM DISC CHANNEL guide (which is in my sig).

Quote:
I have never heard of the application you have. But I have used Any Title Deleter to run and see what all I have installed. If you want to know what cIOS you have you can run Any Title Deleter then go to system files and look for 222, 223, 249 in the list. If you have any of those listed then you have that custom IOS installed. JUST NEVER DELETE ANY IOS LESSER THEN 222/223/249 OR YOU COULD BRICK!

This will let you know what slot the cIOS is installed to but it will not tell you the version (at least I don't think it will). It just shows what slot the cIOS is installed to.

Quote:
10. I know for sure I got "cIOS36 rev10" installed. Can/should I also install "cIOS36 rev11" (or newer)? Will that replace the old one or will they go hand in hand?
I would install cIOS38_rev14. cIOS36 & cIOS38 is installed to SLOT249 so the cIOS versions will just overwrite each other (no need to uninstall the older version).

Slot 222/223 is a different custom IOS that is usually installed for Guitar Hero so the instruments can be synced where cIOS36/38 has issues doing this. I don't have Guitar Hero so I don't know allot about 222/223.

Quote:
11. Is "cIOS 249rev9" actually also called cIOS38 or something?
cIOS 249rev9 is more then likely cIOS36_rev9 it is just in WAD format instead of using an installer like other versions have.

12 and 13
I have already explained above.

Thank you so much larrylje! What would we do withous guys like you? =)

Just a few thoughts of what you wrote..

1. You are telling me that "IOS38-64-v3610.wad" is the official (non customized) ios from Nintendo? So if I should install that .wad-file with a Wad-Installer (Waninkokos) it would just install the ios as it is (not patch it first)? But the .dol installer (Wad option) would patch it for me automatically? Also if I donīt have the .wad-file the "network installation" from the .dol installer would download the official ios from Nintendo, than patch it and install it? Is that correct understood?

2. Also you wrote this:

4. Is it correct that a dol forwarder is just like a shortcut to run applications from your SD card?

Yes this is true it is just a shortcut to the SD card. Using a forwarder will avoid having to use the HBC to load the application.

Iīm kind of confused here. I thought "Channels" was installed in the NAND and visible on the System Menu so you could boot the application directly (like Disc Channel or Weather Channel or what it is called) without need of any SD card or similar. And that "forwarders" was used through HBC to load applications from the SD card.

But that is wrong then? Where are the forwarders placed then? Also on the System Menu like the Channels?

Edit: Oh two more I forgot.

3. I installed NUSD (NUS Downloader) just to try it out. In the Menu you can choose "Database" and then "IOS". If you then click for example IOS36 you get 3 choices: 1042, 3090 and 3094. I understand that 3094 is the latest but if you check webpages and forum they are always called "cIOS36_rev10-Installer" and so on. How can I find out which one is which? For instance, which one of these 3 is rev10?

4. When downloading from NUSD is sometimes says "safe missmatch" or similar. Anything wrong or is it safe to use anyway? Should I redownload?

Thanks again for all your effort!
