Found this thread http://www.gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=147638 and itīs seems like a cool, popular Loader. As usual some questions pops up. Hopefully anyone can answer them.

1. First of all, a question using .dol files. Could a .dol file be both a installation program AND a boot file for an application (that doesnīt need any installation)? Why Iīm asking is because the only time I used a boot.dol manually was when I installed "cIOS36_rev10-Installer". I could during the installation chose "WAD" or "Network"-installation. But that was ONLY because that was an installation boot.dol? Otherwise the boot.dol is just a shortcut to the application which is placed elsewhere on the SD-card (on most cases the root)?

2. When I installed USB Loader by Brisma a week ago I followed this guide: http://www.instructables.com/id/SPVRKYJFU6LR56W/

I then got a channel on the SM to start the Loader with. If I unplug the SD Card and try use start the Loader I get an error saying it canīt find FAT File System or something like that. Is that because the channel is actually an Forwarder to the SD-card? I guess so but would like to be sure.

3. Iīve downloaded the file "sdusb-loader_cfg41.zip" found in the gba-thread I wrote in the beginning. That one contains a folder called "inSDRoot" and inside that one we have two other folders "apps" and "usb-loader". Obviously I should place those two folders in the root of my SD-Card.

So, first problem. Iīm already using "USB Loader by Brisma" and that loader has the exact same folder (the name of it) in the exact same spot (SD root).

What do to with that? Could I rename any of the Loaders folder or would that screw up any config file?

Update: Tried to rename the first "usb-loader" folder (by brisma) to "usb-loader_brisma". The Loader started but I guess some config file got screwed (the paths) since it canīt find any covers and so on. But how could even the loader start? Does the forwarder on SM search the whole SD-card for the brisma loader?

4. Iīve also downloaded the "USBLoaderCFG_Forwarder.rar". That one contains "USBLoaderCFG_Forwarder.dol" and "USBLoaderCFG_Forwarder-UCXF.wad".

When I read the readme it states:

Trying to load CFG USB Loader from different paths, the load order is:

1. sd:/apps/usbloader_cfg/boot.dol
2. sd:/apps/usbloader/boot.dol
3. usb:/apps/usbloader_cfg/boot.dol
4. usb:/apps/usbloader/boot.dol

So I guess the best thing would be to place the program in "sd:/apps/usbloader_cfg/" so it doesnīt intervene with my USB Loader by Brisma Loader folder? I canīt choose another path?

Also it says:

Installation:
-------------

Copy the WAD to your SD or USB storage and install the channel with Wad-Manager.

If you use Preloader for launching Configurable USB Loader,
copy the forwarder DOL to the sd root and install it as file.

I donīt use preloader so I have to use the WAD-file? I canīt rename the "USBLoaderCFG_Forwarder.dol" to "boot.dol" and run it through HBC?

Sorry for my massive ammount of questions. But I canīt get a hold of these by just reading. Thnx in advance.

1. the system files for the wii are called dol and wad files. kinda like windows sys and dll files. boot.dol usually goes on the root of the sd card so the system will see it and automatically boot it file.

2. yes they must stay in the wii... the channel you have is called a re-director...it just loads the program off the sd card...it just makes it easier to update the program by changing the file on the card instead if un-installing then re-installing out of the wii memory.

3.you can just add the files to the app folder (in addition to the ones already there) ...the programs will find what they need...so long as they are there.

4. if your going to try HBC to load it, it shouldn't matter what it's called.

Tnx mate for your answers!

1. But you say that the boot.dol can be both an installer (different cios versions eg: "cIOS36_rev10-Installer.dol" that only contains a .dol-file) and a booter for itīs specified applications that usually is on the root of the SD-card? Just want to be 100% about the basics.

2. Got it!

3. So youīre saying I can basically rename each folder of the programs to whatever I want and the boot.dol or forwarder will still search, find and boot it?

4. Should it be any differences in using HBC with the .dol file or using WAD-manager and the .wad file?

Thanks again for your answers!

A dol file is just an application that is ran from an SD or USB device. It needs another application like bannerbomb or Homebrew Channel to boot it.

A wad file is installed to the Wii system and it can be either a system file (like IOS) or an aplication. If it is an aplication then you can launch the aplication in the Wii Channel Menu and do not need an SD card to launch it.

cIOS36_rev10-Installer is just a application that installs a custom IOS to the Wii system. It needs content to install the custom IOS and they get the content from either a WAD file or WiFi. That is why the application has the option for WAD Install which you need the specific wad file at the root or you can choose WiFi install which gets the content it needs from the Nintendo servers via WiFi.

Yes the forwarder is linked to the application boot.dol file that is on the SD Card. If you take out the SD Card the forwarder can not find the path it needs to launch the application.

The forwarder could have multiple paths it looks for. usb-loader_brisma could be one of those paths. Technically if the loader doesn't find the directory the loader should be in then it shouldn't load at all.

This would be an example of my answer to the above post.

This forwarder has multiple paths it will look in. When it comes to the first path that it can find then it will boot from that directory.

So if you want to keep both forwarders and have both loaders then keep the brisma application folder named the same usbloader then name the sdusb-loader_cfg41 application folder to usbloader_cfg.

Thank you very much larrylje for you reply. Just a few thoughts of what you wrote.

1. Is it possible to edit or make a new forwarder yourself and perhaps add/edit paths? I got both the forwarder.wad and forwarder.dol files.

2. What would happen if I have the "USB Loader by Brisma"-files in the "sd:/apps/usbloader/"-folder and nothing at all in the "sd:/apps/usbloader_cfg/"-folder and then start "USBLoaderCFG_Forwarder"?

Wouldnīt the "USB Loader CFG"-forwarder try to start "USB Loader Brisma" since it is Brismas boot.dol that is accessible when there are not files at all in the usbloader_cfg folder?

Load Order:
1. sd:/apps/usbloader_cfg/boot.dol
2. sd:/apps/usbloader/boot.dol

3. I assume every boot.dol is unique with information which files it should access/boot?

4. Would you recommend to go to 4.1 with Waninkokos updater before proceeding with any more homebrew installations? I got 3.2 right now.

5. I read sometimes that itīs recommended to turn "Wiiconnect24" off before doing certain things. Iīve never used Wiiconnect24 so when I tried to start it I had to accept a license agreement and so on. I declined and let it be as it was.

Do I really have to start it before I can switch it off? Am I safe since I have to accept the license agreement before the program can even start?

Thank you for your time!

The forwarder will not look for the boot.dol file. It needs to be in the specified directory so it can find it.

If you want to update to 4.1 firmware then go to the 4.1 SOFTMOD guide in my sig. Download the 4.1 FIRMWARE SOFTMOD PACK and extract it to the SD Card.

Then follow the sections I have listed below in the order I have them.

cIOS38_rev14:

Update to 4.1 firmware (as you would normally).

IOS DOWNGRADER:

IOS60Patched.wad & NeoGamma R6:

There is nothing wrong with having WiiConnect24 on.

I have been reading this for a bit and I think I got mixed up. Can I copy the USBLoaderCFG files i.e. insdroot:/apps/USBLoader and the insdroot:/USBLoader/ filse to a second partition of my USB drive and then use the USB forwarder to launch the program. By then returning my SD slot to the Wii for Guitar game DLC. I have used forwarders before but to launch programs located on the SD card. I have been using USB_Loader_GX-ULNR-r600 as a channel so to free up the SD slot. I'm now unclear on the USB Forwarder. I installed the forwarder Wad that came with the USBLoaderCFG_Forwarder "USBLoaderCFG_Forwarder_USB-UCUF.wad" Not finding any other information as of yet I moved the INSDROOT files to the root of the USB drive. When I launch the USB forwarder it fails with a fault similar to "Can not enable Drive" I installed the Forwarder using ISO249.

Returning From the net I found that someone has created a Channel Here I a link to the Full Channel v40 (by zektor)
where it is talked about and
Here is the file

Tnx man. Iīve read your guide (very nice). But you wrote:

IF YOUR WII IS 4.0 OR BELOW AND ALREADY SOFTMODED (with cIOS36_rev8 or higher and homebrew channel) ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS UPDATE TO 4.1 USING THE NINTENDO SERVERS (how you normally would update). THEN INSTALL THE IOS60PATCHED.WAD AND RUN IOS DOWNGRADER!

Iīm on 3.2E, cios36rev10 and got HBC. Do you really mean that I should use the normal update function in the Menu? Wouldnīt that disable some nice functions (trucha)?

I shouldnīt use Waninkokos 4.1 Updater instead of Nintendos Server?

When reading the readme file for Waninkokos release it seems very simple:

[ DESCRIPTION ]:

- This application allows you to update your console's firmware, installing *only* the
most important updates (System IOS, System Menu, new channels...).

Thanks to this you can keep some features like Trucha bug that affected first IOS
versions.

[ REQUISITES ]:

- 150-250 free blocks.
- Internet connection.

[ HOW TO USE ]:

- Run the application with any method to load homebrew and the update will be done
automatically.

Isnīt that enough? I really have to use the downgrader and install IOS60Patched and NeoGamma R6 as you state in your guide? Also install cIOS38_rev14 instead of cIOS36_rev10?

Yes update with normal update.

As well cIOS38_rev14 is latest custom IOS and is the best available at this time.

Also doing these steps will keep trucha enabled.

I know what I am talking about but if you want to do it your way then by all means go ahead.

Ok thnx mate. And if you say something I will off course listen to you before trying anything stupid myself. You have my biggest respect.

It just "seemed" easier to follow the instructions in his readme file (just use one .dol file). But I guess thatīs just one part of the whole operation and you got it all covered.

But is it really any point to do the update? Does 4.1 have any big advantages over 3.2 at this time?

Also cIOS38rev14 will overwrite cIOS36rev10 since both goes to IOS249 huh?

Thnx again for all your answers.

4.1 firmware has latest updates that newer games need. It also lets you move WiiWare & VC Games to SD Card and lets you use SDHC SD Cards up to 32GB.

cIOS38_rev14 will overwrite cIOS36_rev10
