I've not been keeping track of things since like 2007. I have a wii with wiikey 1.9s firmware. At some point I installed homebrew channel, probably with bannerbomb or something like that.
I've gotten interested in wad files, but wad manager 1.4 gets a ticket error when I attempt install of them. My system menu is currently 3.4u.
Is it safe to do the update to 4.1 or whatever the current system menu is, and then proceed with softmod instructions listed below using bootmi and what not? I kinda just need to understand the correct route to take to get moving again.
thanks

This guide is for unhacked Wii's, if you have previously modded your Wii, I will not provide any support if anything goes wrong if you follow this guide.
Lastly, this is risky, you CAN break your Wii doing this, tho it is rare. Proceed with caution, and make sure you understand what your doing before attempting this guide.
Update System Firmware & Install BootMii/Homebrew Channel
* Update to System Firmware v4.1 via Nintendo's offical update.
* Insert the SD card into your Wii and power it on if not already.
* Click on the Wii icon, then to Data Management, then Channels, and SD at the top. You should get a pop up message asking if you wish to install the boot.elf.
* Let this load and Press 1 when prompted.
* If you have a newer Wii, you will only be allowed to install BootMii as an IOS (this is ok).
* Click continue.
* If you are able to install BootMii as boot2, do so. If not, just install it as an IOS.
* Next get back to where you just were and install the HomeBrew Channel (this is included in the BootMii hack).
Note: If you installed BootMii as boot2, your Wii will always boot to the BootMii menu as long as you have the SD card in the slot with the BootMii folder. If you don't want this to happen, either remove the BootMii folder from your SD (save it somewhere else), or you can rename it to something else and leave it on the card. You will need this folder to get to the BootMii menu, so do not lose this folder.
Back up system NAND with BootMii
* Put the SD card in your Wii. For folks that installed as boot2, just make sure the BootMii folder is on the root of your SD card and restart your Wii. Continue 4 steps down.
* A HomeBrew channel should have appeared on the first page of your Wii channels. Start this channel.
* Press the Home button on your Wii remote.
* Press Launch BootMii.
* Your Wii will restart to a new menu. This is BootMii.
You will need a GameCube controller to use this screen if you installed as IOS. If you installed as boot2, you can use the buttons on your Wii (power, reset, and eject) to navigate.
* Go over to the little gears and press A.
* Click on the icon with the arrow pointing from the chip to the SD card.
* Follow the steps on the screen-- press start, then A to begin the dump.
* This will take about 7-10 minutes depending on the speed of your SD card.
You now have a NAND backup of your Wii in case anything awful happens and you get a bricked Wii. Make a copy of this nand.bin and save it somewhere safe. You can remove it from your SD card as well, as you probably won't use it very often.
Note: If you need to restore your NAND, do the same thing to get to BootMii and options, but instead of clicking the icon with the picture of the chip to the SD card-- click the one with SD card to chip. Follow the instructions from there.
Patching IOS36 to allow installation of cIOS38 Rev14
* Start Homebrew channel
* Load Trucha Bug Restorer
* Use IOS 36 to downgrade 15. << Watch Video. See note if you don't have a network connection!
* Use IOS 15 to patch 36. << Watch video. See note if you don't have a network connection!
* And use 36 to restore 15. << Watch video. See note if you don't have a network connection!
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltrd3oq8hPc
Note: If you do not have a network connection, select wad installation where the video says network install.
Installing Preloader
* Launch HBC.
* Load PreLoader and press 1 when instructed and PreLoader will install.
Installing cIOS38 Rev14
* Launch HBC.
* Load cIOS38 rev14.
* Change whatever the default option you see to use IOS36 (since we just patched it) and press A.
* It will ask if you're sure and tell you that your Wii could brick, say yes (since you made that NAND backup)
Installing cIOS 202 (USB2.0 Fix for MPlayer CE)
* Launch HBC.
* Load cIOS 202 Installer
* Change whatever the default option you see to use IOS36 (since we just patched it) and press A.
* Let it install
Install cIOSCORP v3.3
* Run the "cIOSCORP v3.3 Installer" application via the Homebrew Channel, sit back, and wait a while. That's it!
* Run the "cMIOS Installer" application via the Homebrew Channel, after installing cIOSCORP v3.3.
* Run the "DVDX Fix Installer" application via the Homebrew Channel. This will install an unmodified IOS36 as IOS201 and a DVDX channel that runs under said IOS201.

Follow the 4.1 FIRMWARE SOFTMOD GUIDE in my sig. You can skip the Hombrew Channel (bannerbomb/hackmii installer) Part of the guide since you already have Homebrew Channel.
So all you really need to do is update to 4.1 firmware. Download the 4.1 FIRMWARE SOFTMOD PACK and extract it to your SD Card. Then follow the guide starting with cIOS38_rev14.

I have a similar problem, Wii 3.4u, Cyclowiz chip, with homebrew channel but I lost my SD card with all HBC files, so when I start HBC it just hangs on the title screen since there are no menus to load, i guess. I'd like to start playing with wads again.
I installed it when it came out so it's an old version, something 7 i think, and I've been out of the loop for a year so i'm pretty lost.
How do I upgrade HBC or at least get the menus back? Should it be upgraded to the latest version before installing the softmod stuff?
Thanks

thank you for answering.
I upgraded to system 4.1, that went OK.
I started with this step as you stated.
cIOS38_rev14:
Start the Homebrew Channel and run "cIOS38_rev14 Installer".
Select IOS35 for the IOS to use for Instillation.
You have 2 options on how to install the cIOS (you do not need to do both options!)...
a) WAD Installation: You will need to Google IOS38-64-v3610.wad and download it. Then place it in the root of the SD Card. Then chose WAD Installation option.
or
b) Network Installation: At the instillation option screen press RIGHT 1 time on the D-pad of the Wiimote. This will download the files via WiFi.
After you have selected the option you want and installed the cIOS your Wii should reboot to the Wii Channel menu.
that went OK. Restarted as instructed.
Went on to next step
IOS DOWNGRADER:
IOS Downgrader will downgrade IOS's and patch them to fix the Trucha Signed exploit. This will allow Trucha Signed applications and disc run on the Wii System (This is not mandatory to do but if you want the trucha exploit fixed then run it).
Run Homebrew Channel and choose IOS Downgrader in the Homebrew Channel list. Follow the On-screen instructions (if some things fail, simply run the program again until all of them succeed).
all that did was reboot the WII.
Attempted to go to step after that
IOS60Patched and NeoGamma R6:
Run WAD Manager.
Select A to agree to the disclaimer.
Select IOS version to use: <IOS249> Press A.
Select source device: <Wii SD Slot> Press A.
Go to IOS60patched.wad and press A.
Select action: <install wad> press A.
After it installs IOS60patched go to NeoGammaR6-NGBL.wad and press A.
Select action: <install wad> press A.
After the WAD files are installed press HOME to return to the Wii System menu.
I did not have a IOS 249. I decided to stop there Here is a report I ran with another utility, dunno if it is useful. thanks in advance for any additional assistance.

it looks like I actually needed to start with the IOS35 downgrader first. I restarted the procedure with that and thing seem to be progressing better.
