I have a Wii with and original wiikey installed that has the homebrew chanell installed. I got a new copy of MP Trilogy from game fly and my wii could not read the disc. I thought original copies always worked, has anybody else had this problem? Can I expect this from GH5 as well?
Thanks!

I believe that Metroid Prime Trilogy is a dual layered disc. Some consoles have had issues with playing dual layered discs whether initially or over time. Can you play an original Super Smash Bros Brawl?

I can play the backed up version, but I never tried the original. the backup is on a DL disc.

It's pretty strange that a backup of Brawl will play but an original Metroid Prime Trilogy won't. Although I am not saying to assume that just because one dual layered disc works that another one will. Regardless an original should always play regardless unless there is some problem with the drive (such as it not being clean, or it wearing out)

Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it.
After Metroid would not play I popped in Rock Band 2 and it worked fine, I think that is only a single layer though. I have not tried Brawl in a while, I can pop that in tonight and see if it still works. Do you have any suggestions for cleaning the lense?

What firmware are you on?
Do you have block disc update enabled on the Wiikey?
Could be your Wii needs an IOS installed that has not been instaled yet.

I am not sure about the firmware number, but I ran the update on-line last night, and the game did not work before or after the update. I do not have the block disc update turned on, at least I don't think I do. I have never turned it on, and never had an update issue with a game before.

Not that it was asked, but I was also able to load games off of my HD and play original single layer discs after my update.

Did you ask for an exchange? Maybe it is a bad pressed disc.

That was my last thought. I was going to see if there were any known issues on the board here, ask the question if I could not find anything, and then send the game back tonight and ask for a different copy if I came up with nothing that worked.
Thank you guys again for the help.

The dual layer back up of Smash Bro's works, so it is quite possibly a bad disc. I will see if game fly can get me a different copy.

It's not a bad disk, it is a modchip issue (Probably)
Unless your wiikey is updated to the last firmware, 1.9s, it will not play dual layer original disks. It will play dual layer backups, but not original games.
It sounds like your wiikey is still on 1.9g, the previous firmware. Update it and it should work.

Thanks for this. I didn't know that. I'm certainly more experienced on the soft mod side of things than the hard. I almost feel as if it (original dual layer vs backup dual layer) doesn't make sense but I guess that's just the way it goes.
As they say "duly noted"

I had to return the game to game fly, but I will update the firmware and try an original dual layer disc again. Thank you guys for all of the help. I am assuming I can get the firmware upgrade from the wiikey web site.

It's not really the same issue, since it's a different error (disk cannot be read vs error 001) and as you pointed out one is an original disk and the other is a backup copy.
Also, I have a wiikey 1 as well (DMS drive) and my MPT backup works perfectly. It did give me a disk read error once, but that has only happened one time so far out of many hours of play time.
