I need to replace my hitachi drive because it is starting to give my dirty disk errors, what 360 drive should I replace it with? Also do I need to get the key off the hitachi, because I have a VIA VT6421L and can't get it in mode b. A link to a site that sells them in Canada would be helpful. I don't want to replace the laser because I would rather have a faster quite drive.

The most common replacement drive is gonna be BenQ you can pick them up on Ebay for 25 bucks with shipping. Also yes your gonna need the Frimware from your original drive.
EDIT
You should try a POT calibration it could solve your problem.. GUIDE

+1 on the pot calibration or even just take a q-tip and alcohol to clean of the lens. if those steps dont work, then get a benq

Alright well the thing is I want to mod my drive and it is very difficult to mod the hitachis with a VIA VT6421L controller. Have any guides that would help with that controller??

Just pick up a VIA 6421 on ebay. I think with shipping it was less than 10 bucks. and then your pretty much compatible with everything.

Hitachi's are prolly the most aqward drives there is (even more awqard than the Lite On's) and it all depends on which model Hitachi.
Use the guide in the sticky, it works though its more complicated than Jungle Flasher. Just make sure you use iExtreme 1.51 instead of the one in the tutorial (think its 1.2)
EDIT: Just read your other thread regarding SLAX issue, try opening the tray when getting in to mode B, its worked for me in the past

I have tried opening the tray while in slave, but I think it is my chipset. So I think I will go with the pot calibration, but don't I already have the card you suggested porosus?
PS I could use jungle flasher ,but my computer won't boot to slax if my xbox 360 is turned on before hand, I get install bios error the second screen.

I replaced a hitachi v79 with a BENQ the other day using a VIA6421 and the CK3 connectivity kit. Worked beautifully. :)
Also done this before using iPrep.

The CK3 kit can be bought from a variety of resellers for roughly £32-38 which equates to about $50 I think?
I'd definately say the BENQ is the best drive to use. Quietest, easiest to flash and reflash and most importantly cheapest. You have to get the key off the hitachi otherwise your new drive won't read XBOX games and you'll just have a glorified DVD player!
The VIA6421 SATA PCI card costs like £5 these days! Get that! :) You may not even need the CK3 kit in that case if you don't mind the risk that comes with using the XBOX power brick! (never had a problem with it before i got CK3 kit)

I already have that card, but can't get it into mode b using slax what other choice do I have, I am not going to buy the connection kit too expensive. I have that card, but my computer won't boot if my xbox 360 is turned on before hand it says "bios does not be installed". I think I will buy a benq anwya because I don't have the gear for the pot fix, plus the laser is probably dead used for 4 years. So how much would a benq cost me in canadian?

I used JungleFlasher and pressed sand mode b in the hitachi tab, do that and use another flashing method if you want to. Don't power down the drive until you have read the firmware or it will go back into normal mode.
I've actually got hitachis into mode b by unplugging the xbox with the tray opened, plugging it back in and pressing eject to power on the xbox the drive will close a bit and open again and that's your mode b signal.
