I've been having a problem recently that's got me totally stumped. Recently I've had my back-ups crap out on me with the "Disc Read Error" which tells me to clean the disc and restart. Now the first time I thought nothing of it, so I wiped the disc, popped it back in and found at the SAME place in the game it happened again and again.
It's actually happened with two games now, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Red Faction: Guerrilla. Both games get the error in the same place without fail. The first time I thought maybe the disc was scratched when I ripped it, but with Red Faction, I popped the original disc in and it worked fine. I've checked all the discs, they're all scratch and smudge free. All my other games work perfectly fine, back up or original. I'm wondering if maybe the pack of discs I have are wonky, or something's not right with the seemingly perfect rips and patches; obviously I'm hoping it's not the xbox itself.

If anyone would be able to shed some light on this odd occurrence that would be greatly appreciated. I currently have my xbox standing up vertically, and have tried playing both games while having the xbox horizontal; I also have a Talismoon whisper fan in there. All back-ups were ripped using wxripper then patched with ABG with the recent 3rd wave attachment, and finally burnt to Verbatim brand DL discs using IMGBurn. I've been at this for over a year now and have never had this problem. Thanks in advance

sounds like the orig, might of had a spot on the disc when you ripped it, anything minor could translate to something big on your copy. i would try reburning it. dosn't sounds like an xbox issue to me.

Ya, I was wondering about that, I'm always careful to thoroughly wipe the original with a shammy cloth before ripping. I'll try a few more times. It's really quite odd. It's only been the last two games I've ripped. All my other back-ups work perfectly fine

Yeah your original disc might of had a smudge on it. If it was the xbox 360 alot of your backups would be saying clean game. It seems backups are the first thing to go when lasers are dying. Unless you use verbatrim, I did a few test on systems that lasers were going bad. Verbatrims always booted up. I heard alot of people complaining of batman freezing at a certain part.

Well that's good to know about the laser should be okay. Hmmm just out of curiosity, do you know where in Batman it's freezing for the cases you've heard of? Because I seem to have a problem with this one door in the botanical gardens, and the just after the training mission on Red Faction. I am relieved to hear it's not the xbox. Though it's still frustrating to have these games not working on me. Is there any chance I've just had some faulty blanks? I know every-so-often that can happen. I've just never had that problem with verbatims. Thank you both for your quick feed back.

This is getting ridiculous! All 3 of my last rips/burns have worked, only to received a "Disc Read Error." I just did another rip and burn, It worked perfectly, then again, same error. Three in a row is just weird. I've wiped the original discs, all my other back-ups work, the originals work, what is going wrong?! Am I crazy to think my discs are faulty? I've never had this problem before in the year and a half I've been making back-ups. In addition, my XBOX is running cool, so I've ruled out the drive over heating, scratches on the discs are non-existent, the original discs have some minor usage marks, but no out of the ordinary scratches. Again, the copies work up until a certain point, then crap out. Usually when there's a loading screen involved. I ask again, should I be worried about my xbox?

If you get new discs and still have this problem, the stress on your laser caused by backup reading could be killing it (happens after a good while) and you could need a new laser or drive.

If you have a good burner the above is likely your problem and the only reason the originals work is because the laser can still read them properly it craps out on backups first as it takes more effort for it to read them.

EDIT: If it's only them 2 games try downloading torrents of them (legal if you have the original) And see will it work, my backup of batman AA works good but freezes sometimes (once in 10 hours and twice in 1 hour in a different xbox) but that's not unreadable it's a lock-up.

Hmmm.... Well I actually counted the discs I have left, to find that about 4 of the 5 or 6 I've so far used do not work. At least one has, which would have been a wave 3 game. Now I doubt it's the xbox laser because I have wave 3 back-ups that work fine, as well as older back-ups that work fine. Which makes this whole thing very confusing. The only consistency in what doesn't work have been the last 3 games.

Doing a bit more digging on this issue, I found another forum, dedicated to xbox 360 mods, flashes, back-ups, etc. where someone had the seemingly the same problem, and found that the problem was in their lite-on drive in their xbox 360. Not that the laser was worn out, but that the drive simply couldn't handle certain back-ups. How valid it is or not, I don't know, just thought I'd throw that in. And here's the link for that specific thread:

http://360mods.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=12546

Just as a follow-up question in regards to the link: I noticed the original post date for this problem was Jan 09, before iextreme 1.6 was out on all drives, might that have been the problem then? Because I recently contacted the person who flashed my drive, and found out it was done in June with 1.6. Again, just throwing ideas out there.

Thanks again for the help from everyone with this mystery.

I've experienced the same problem myself recently after many, many years of successfully backing up my originals.

You should try installing the problematic games onto your hard drive and play them from there. If your 360 manages to install the games then you at least know it's not your backups being scratched or dirty. However, if playing the games from your hard drive produces the same unreadable error at the same point in the game ... then it looks like your system's cache needs to be cleared.

This is what occurred with my console after the Aug 11th Live update.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm... I cleared the cache, and Batman: AA suddenly worked for about 20min! I was a little bummed that it received the error again after only 20min. One of the other games, Red Faction, received the same problem right away. I'll attempt a re-burn on that one. I can't say one way or another whether or not clearing the cache really worked or not. But thanks for the advise.

I've noticed right before I get the Disc Read Error, the disc drive STOPS spinning... Is that normal?

Well I've been having some terrible luck. I found my Batman disc is completely scratched up and useless, Red Faction does work (yay!), yet I'm still receiving Disc Read Error messages with my rips. I looked at the disc I was using to copy them, as I don't have a Kreon drive and use the hotswap method with wxripper, to find that it was completely scratched up. I thought maybe that's causing my problems (even though it was ripping perfectly fine). So raided my DVD collection for DL discs. Finding a handful, I sifted out the ones with even the slightest scratch. The last 3 discs I used (Amadeus, Jurassic Park 3, and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back) have all failed to even rip the games. Is this because they're spotless, and there's an imperfection on the game disc, or is something just seriously wrong here? This is getting to be just ridiculous! Since I've perfected my copying process, I've never produced any coasters, now I suddenly have half a pack of Verbatim DL discs just sitting in my trash can.
