Do you have the VIA driver removed?

You could save the custom firmware and then boot to a USB drive with DOS Flash and flash the drive that way.

Best guide I've seen so far - thanks!

I have a new 9345OC Liteon. Just wondering if this guide will work for it. Has anyone had success with this drive yet? Is there a guide for this drive?

Thanks for any help.

search. You need good experienced solder skills to do these.

So, the 9345 definitely requires soldering? I've seen a few posts in various places where an updated fw template was used with JF and apparently worked.

I've got decent soldering skills - but exp only with original xbox. Just want to be sure it's necessary before I start soldering.

Has anyone managed to flash any drive at all with only a laptop with ExpressCard slot?

This is the only option available to me as I don't have a desktop PC anymore but 3 laptops in the house, all with only ExpressCard slots.

I know you can get VIA chipset PCMCIA SATA cards and there are converters to run them from a ExpressCard slot but I don't know what to get and I'm in the UK anyway so it's even harder to find them.

So, anyone done it and what did you use?

Thanks.

Laptop flashing is not always the best thing. I would suggest you get a really low end system

I've seen it done with other drives though, just not this Lite-On yet.

Alright, so are there any motherboard requirements or could I just use an old IDE board with a SATA PCI card?

Are you using your external sata?

To be honest with you....

as long as the drive is detected in the bios as an ide device I don't see why this would not work. Another alternative is dos flashing.

hi!

i have trouble with flashing my lite-on 83850c, following this tutorial.
i cant get extracted any data from it.
when i press the lo83 information, i follow the precise steps of getting the tray into half open position, but i keep on getting error over and over.
its not that the output data is wrong, but rather that there is no output data at all. only .........
i also tried with dosflash, and the steps that dosflash describe for getting the tray into half open position. to no avail.

i use a x64 system on windows 7.
i have signed portio64.sys, and run windows in test mode, so the portio driver should be loading.
my motherboard is a msi k9a2 premium, wich means my sata controller is a amd chip. hence i have not deleted the default drivers (via drivers), as i understood that was only for a specific via card.
the lite-on drive does show up both in bios, and in dosflash, and in jungleflasher, so apparently there is some communication going on between pc and drive. but it will not read when using lo83.
im using a homemade transistor circuit between r707 and 9 pin serial port (pl 2303 usb to serial adapter. win 7 drivers installed and verified working). homemade connectivity circuit also verified and working.

can anyone spot a mistake? got some hints? common errors that fit my description?

i figured out mu problem.
this tutorial only works for 83850c version 1.
the v1 drives is typically made before july/august 2009 drive manufacture date (NOT xbox mfr date!).
in july/august, there is a 50/50 chance of wich version your drive is.

there is no way to see externally on the drive if it is version 1 or 2, so only way to find out is to try THIS TUTORIAL.

if THIS TUTORIAL works, then it is a 83850c V1, and you are all good to go.

if it does not work, you have a 83850c V2, and then this tutorial will never work whatever you do.
you need to use the MRA hack.

i just did on my own 83850c V2, as of tonight. after having lot of trouble figuring this out (information is scattered, and different forums say different things, etc).

for a complete guide on the MRA hack, download jungleflasher tutorial from http://jungleflasher.net/downloads.html also, you need jungleflasher version 0.1.69 or later.

MRA hack works on EVERY lite-on drive as of today.
but is needed only for 83850c V2, and the 9xxxx drive (dont remember full model name of it, but there is only 1 lite on starting with 9).

yes. upgrading to 161 will be the same as your original flash. however, you can skip the part about dumping your FW. just get the drive into vendor mode, put your dummy as source, 161 as destination, spoof to source, then erase/write like the first time.

Come talk with us on efnet at #elitemods !!! or just click ME

ALSO, DO NOT SEND ME MESSAGES ON LIVE REGARDING MODDING CONSOLES, OR HOW I PLAYED A CERTAIN GAME EARLY. I WILL NOT RESPOND. I WILL INSTEAD DELETE YOUR MESSAGE, AND BLOCK ALL COMMUNICATION FROM YOU. JUST SEND ME A PM ON HERE.

Nice 1 for the swift reply mate - I got the LiteOn_iXtreme_v1.61_repack - would I need to rename ix161-838 to ix161-liteon838 ?

All you have to do is plain and simple my friend.

1. connect everything properly.
2. Extract dummy by pulling out power cord from back of drive as the drive is retracting so its half open.
3. Use dummy as source and make sure all the information on the destination and the source matches. Do not use ixtreme 1.61v2 if you don't have a v2 drive.

This is all in the jungle flasher tutorial. I find the tutorial from jungle flasher better.

Just make sure that you properly get a dummy file. If you want to be completely sure then you can do it twice to see if you get the same drive key. All you are doing is extracting the key. IF you get the same then I don't think there is a reason to believe the dummy key is wrong.

You might need the Dummy key in the future if you want to flash to stock but I don't think that is possible nor has it been known that flashing to stock will prevent you from being banned.

The drive key is what is important my friend. You can save that dummy file somewhere safe.
