pete,
Is the ritek brand the only one you use, what do you think of the optodiscs. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

www.meritline.com
They have sample orders,u can buy just 25 if u want
Personaly! I Buy the Go4's 100 pk.Whiteface Printable W/the blockbuster type Video cases,for $135.00.This includes SHIPPING
Buy the 100 pack of GO4's I promise u,u won't go wrong.I've had about 4 coasters on 200 burns,& I do believe it was my fault. Not the discs, these are a good Blank DVD.I use the DVD-r over the DVD+r,for the simple reason they are more compatible,w/more DVD Players. To date none of my player refuse to play these DVD's.Same w/my friends DVD Players,Prior to Useing GO4's,I used different Brands (Princo,Memorex, etc.)I ended up with a lot of BLEMISHED DISCS,that would skip,Freeze,or just refused to play

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU,I'm just one of many on this site who will steer u in this direction Ritek GO4's Rock

Just wondering why everyone is having so much media trouble. I've been buying Memorex and Imation with no trouble and from the company with the best price. With a 50 or 100 pack I get free shipping to my front door or the PO. The coasters I have created can usually be traced to an interference problem with the burn. Occasionally a program will be activated in the background and I'll get a minor flaw. The other coasters, I don't get any very often, are caused by my errors. Out of about 200 discs, I may have had 5 flawed discs and I can't really pin that down to the media. I could have messed those up. Or the 321 problem could have eaten them. You never know with Platinum.

rick5446....

You can buy single dvd cases like Blockbuster uses at
www.supermediastore.com for 28 cents each in lots of 100 with free shipping. The double cases if you want them are I think the same price with free shipping.

I have ordered 400 of them and they are good.

For them thats aked, I also use "branded" 4X Verbatim - they are right up there with the Ritek G04's.

Point of fact: Memorex has 4 different mmfgs making their media for them and their quality is, as you might imagine, all over creation. I don't relish taking a gamble when it comes to media -

Like gambling, some win (I'm glad for them) but most lose, varing amounts, but lose they do -

cheers,

Pete

I was one of the losers on the memorex merry-go-round.
After buying several hundred discs that worked well from Memorex I purchased a 100 pack of DVD-Rs and a 100 pack of DVD+Rs, both with printable surfaces. Nearly all the -Rs burned but have massive unrecoverable errors. The +Rs worked great like the previous -Rs I had purchased.

90 discs were thrown away. I checked the discs and all of my good batches were Ricoh id. My bad 100 were CMC. This particular batch of CMCs recieved bad marks on the media review sites.

Even the cheapest crap media I have used would burn good 90% of the time. Just the Memorex had that problem for me. Now it is Ritek and Verbatim for me.
Some Prodisc get used also but they have been 100% reliable and use AZO dye.

My biggest question is: I have completed some backups and I can view them perfectly on my computer. But on my standalone dvd players is where the problem lies. I'm using the shrink/decrypter combo, and maybe 3 out of the 10 that I have done have worked on my standalone, but they work fine on my computer. Is this a media problem in the sense that I'm using the wrong media. My standalone runs +r's my burner is a dual format. I got a few -r's just to try and those didn't even start up on my stand alone. The +r's would work fine but them 30 mins in or more the picture and sound start to skip and stall and then just stops all together. Is this a media problem, user error or standalone problem. I'm really starting to get frustrated because I can't figure it out. When running shrink I'm making a full back up, automatic compression, deselecting french, spanish audio and subtitles. Unselecting region free and only selecting region 1. If anyone can give me any help I'd greatly appreciate it. Would love to watch the movies on my standalone especially the one in my kids room wich is the main reason I'm backing up my movies, you know how rough kids can be.

Sounds like Media but what kind of stand alone are you using. Some don't work as well like Sonys sometimes.

What media and finally what burner. Sometimes a flash can smoothout the errors.

That said, it sounds like my bad memorex problem. They would play half way on the average then start breaking up. Riteks and Verbatims and Prodisc have been perfect for me even at 8x burning on my new Nec 2500.

My Sony(s) play most media brands , so it would seem whomever you got that advice from on Sony DVD Players [maybe even your own experience] is flawed... if the back up's were done in the correct way & w/ good blank media you/they should not have had a problem 64026402

Was you told a good few times already brmtrngl that Ritek G04 or Verbatim were good discs to trust ?? [I ask that w/ sarcasm yes as I know you have been told ... as ScubaPete & I have definitely told in this very thread].
If you choose to be ignorant to the experience of ppl that have been doing this for a long while then it is your DVD coaster funeral.

Gentlemen,

I fear sometimes the point becomes lost because all things are not considered -

When you purchase an original DVD - the movie has been "Pressed" into the disc / dye therefore everything can read it (it plays everywhere). When you backup a DVD, you?re burning the files on to a surface that may or may not be even and consistent in its application. Sooo, the media and the dyed surface you?re burning are of utmost importance both in the ability of players to read it and of it's expected lifetime of retention.

Both of these factors are considered when we recommend the media that we do -

Memorex is made by 4 different mfgrs., do you know who?s making your media tonight ?? Because of the spread of media suppliers the quality, as you might well imagine is all over creation and back -

Like the Country and Western song goes,
?When your Hot you?re Hot, and when you?re not, you?re not !?

cheers,

Pete

From your last post I would consider the media the problem. Go get some Verbatim or branded Ritek and try again.
It might be good to flash the firmware on your IO drive. This can sometimes improve the burn quality.( If your not comfortable doing firmware updates then don't do it. The procedure is somewhat risky to the drive.)

Herbsman
I didn't mean to say all Sonys were a problem. They do seem to come up more often as a brand that might be picky on the media and book type.

My freind with a Sony is the only one of my freinds that has trouble with playing DVD-Rs. It will Play +Rs and seems OK with -Rs if burned with DVD-ROM book type.
I'm sure many other players have similar concerns.

Donald

Memorex!!!!NOT SO GOOD!!! Use CD Check....You will see BAD SECTOR on a lot of Discs.
I have a$30.00 A M W DVD player that I bought at Circuit-City it plays anything I put in it even the blemished Discs. But my friends DVD Players Problems (Skipping,Freezeing,Won't play at all,Etc.)
So I repeat myself GO4's,GO4's,GO4's.I use DVD-R's they seem to be more compatible with a larger range of DVD Players
P.S tried a bowl of FROSTED FLAKES in My DVD player (Grrreat)

When using DVDShrink, you should also have Nero 6 installed. DVDShrink uses Nero 6 as it's default burner. After DVDShrink is done ripping, it automaticly configures it's self with Nero 6 and starts the burning process. I have no problems at all with DVDShrink. 100% burns...

Not true c.j., DVD Shrink also uses DVD Decrypter as a burning engine so by defination, Nero is not DVD Shrink's default burner.

As I just pointed out, depending on your settings, DVD Shrink can also "configure itself" with DVD Decrypter to start the burning process.

It's not necessary to purchase anything to backup DVD's. If you had read this thread you would have known that :-)

cheers,

Pete

Hey Pete! good to hear from ya, was gone golfing all week-end, just getting back to read the threads. (I don't spend all my time on this PC backing up dvd's). Got a question, I have been using Ritek rw's for all my back-ups. I saw where you said rw doesn't read as well as r on most stand alone players. I have Onkyo (2) and Sony (5) and haven't had any problems so far, but they wouldn't play on my brother's Panasonic (don't they read -r and -rw anyway?). Are you saying I should ALWAYS use r's now, unless I'm experimenting and forget rw? I know that r's are cheaper, but not as cheap as no coasters. Damn it,lol, I just ordered and recieved 100 Ritek rw's, should I send them back?

I am brand new just got my burner today it came with Roxio dvd cd creator 6 I used my dac-100 and sent parts of video (vhs) to computer a 2 min clip burned it to DVD played great then I used the copier I then backup a copy of motorcycle stunt DVD 40 min long worked great played in DVD player in living room. I found your website and started reading I then downloaded DVD Shrink I then saw that you need DVD encrypter but someone else stated that only shink and Nero 6 is needed if only those 2 are needed what will encrypter do for me. I have Nero 5.5.9.14 on my computer right now what I understand is that I need to go and get Nero 6. Then delete my Roxio DVD CD creator 6 and I will be in business. Will the Nero 6 let me upload (vhs, laserdisc) and burn to DVD like the Roxio does I have video tapes that I would like to transfer to DVD one last thing can I put a 2 to 2 1/2 hour video tape on one DVD if so what do I use to do that. Sorry if this sounds stupid I have read so many ways to do this it has got me confused just want to find out before I start burning again.

I'm new here, so I suppose my name will say 'newbie'..*l* However, I've been burning DVD's for a while now, so I'm not a newbie to this. Nor am I looking for advice...just reading the forum.

It seems to me that 'ScubaPete' is about as arrogant and flip as it gets. I read several reply to 'newbies' that were just asking a question, such as where a guide was located, an he launched into some sort of self-aggrandizing tirade...when all that was necessary was a simple answer or a pointer to the information.

If I was new at this, came in here and asked a simple question....and received the kind of replies this fool gives out...I'd tell him exactly where to stick his burner, his media, and his advice. And yes, it would be a tight fit...considering his head is occupying so much of his rectal cavity now.

Edited by Mod: We do NOT require your services thnx , you may not be a newbie to DVD back up but you certainly are newbie when it comes to courtesy & manners ....BANNED!!!

Since you don't need help, seems you're just here to hand out sheeeaat. Go somewhere else to peddle your drivel. Pete's been a big help to me and many others in this forum, you have to realize there are guidelines and there's no need to ask when it's been answered a 100 times and you're too lazy to look it up. Talk about self aggrandizing AND tirade, look in the mirror newbie*1*, and while you're at it move out of that glass house.
